Obama wins a razor-thin majority of delegates bound by primaries but Hillary wins the nomination due to the support of just enough superdelegates?

Yep. I think I'd vote for McCain in that situation.

The convention goes miserably, and many Obama supporters will either visibly walk out or be thrown out when they refuse to stop booing Clinton.

Probably so, in an effort to unite the Democrats against the Republicans.

IIRC a heck of a lot of senior Dems didnt formally endorse McGovern... and i think a number openly backed Nixon.

Something like 25% of the Democrats at the convention were backing Nixon against McGovern, IIRC.  I'm guessing a lot of them were Wallace delegates.

Obama would publicly endorse her, but it wouldn't really do anything to sway his supporters.

Superdelegates are not going to be fools enough to go against the actual delegate counts.
