Native American Genocide Resolution

The federal government fully recognizes the United States government role in the systematic extermination of the Native American people, acknowledges that what occurred consisted of both genocide and mass forced relocation, and wholeheartedly apologizes and takes responsibility for the wrongdoings it has committed.

(Sponsor: Ebowed)

[Note to Jas: The two previous Ebowed bills on the legislative agenda appear to have been withdrawn. Hopefully this is correct.]

I would like to propose a (friendly) amendment to change "United States government" to "Atlasian government's".

This would be correct, and I intend to vote "Aye" on this, for the simple reason that, even though it's not going to do anything to solve our wrongdoings of the past, it's something.

I won't be supporting this unless it's attached to a bill that actually does something to raise the Indians from 3rd class citizen status.

The Atlasian government didn't commit genocide against the Native Americans, the U.S. government did.

A sound suggestion.  It has been noted that some of the Indian reservations have the worst living conditions of the United States.  Shannon County, South Dakota is on third world levels in regards to employment, running water, indoor bathrooms, and so on.

I could come up with something which would likely consist of various funding projects in these areas, what else would you suggest?

I agree. Action is better than pronouncement.

From my experience, an official apology is often a very important part of any action plan.  We have been providing entitlements to Native Americans for years, but they still don't trust the government.  There's a reason for that.

There is no such thing as the United States, and there never has been. If this is just a covert attempt to recognize the US, please state so.

Funding projects are fine, but a big part of this problem is poor distribution of funds. We have to find a way to ensure things are more equal..........perhaps Indian Reservation Casino Licenses or Income Taxes that go straight to the other people of the reservation?

WTF!

That was not my intention at all.  Firstly, most of atlasia's law code is based on pre-2004 US law code.  If you don't believe check the dozens of bills we have passed which amend US law code.  There's a reason we are amending US law code, it's because it transferred from the US to Atlasia.

The United States existed prior to the establishment of Atlasia- this is historically recognized fact regardless of whether you support recognition of the US today.  The reason this resolution says "the United States" is because the genocide occurred under the United States, but the Native Americans in question now live in Atlasia.

I don't know a lot about the Indian casinos, but I'm not happy that, as a general rule, casinos are illegal everywhere else, although I suppose that doesn't have much to do with the issue at hand.

An appropriation for a certain amount of money to improve living conditions on Indian reservations would go a long way: if the constitutional zealots would allow it, I would be happy to guarantee universal health care on the reservations, or make the availability of drinking water a human right, or something along those lines.

Something like infrastructure enhancement. Federal grants for school improvements, the establishment of health clinics, declaring economic stimulus areas where grants could be applied for, etc.

My interpretation would be that Atlasia has existed since 1789 under three separate Constitutions, the original Constitution (1789-2004) and the latter-day Constitutions. The "United States" has never existed in this chronology as distinct from Atlasia, though Atlasia was on "US autopilot" for the original two centuries and change. I suppose this is a bit of a semantics argument, but your wording would suggest that the US and Atlasia have somehow been separate, which to my mind they are not.

Such an interpretation has never been presented anywhere else, especially in any legislative or judicial setting.  Atlasia merely took over from the US in 2004, the circumstances of which are open to creative suggestion.

There seem to be some people concerned about the lack of anything substantial in this legislation. Before I move for a final vote, I'd like to know if there is anything anyone would like to propose to fix that problem.

All right, then, I will move for a final vote.

We are now voting on the final passage of the following legislation. Please vote Aye, Nay or Abstain.

Abstain. Useless fluff.
