I think Olmert needs to go, now.  My personal choice to replace him is either Benjamin Netanyahu or Tzipi Livni; I just hope election get called soon.

Does anyone else agree with me that Israel is one of the worse places where straight PR could possibly be used? Just the luck of everyone involved that straight PR is used.

I heard the Greenies might get 1-2 seats in the next election. They were very close last time IIRC.

I hope Labor can pull something off here but I really doubt anything will happen...

Depends on when the elections are held.  If they're put off for a while, Kadima might escape with only very minimal losses.

Just needs a higher threshold. 5% would at least keep the uber-loonies out.

Yisrael Beiteinu got 9% in 2006.

Regardless, it'd be better to use multi-member constituencies.

Straight PR means extremism. Especially when the parliament is sovereign, as it is in Israel.

How would you set up the constituencies?

Even in multiple member constituencies extremists would get into the Knesset. Any constituency centered on Jerusalem or including the West Bank would be sending them. Even if they were population based districts, who would draw the districts up? Israeli politics is so fractured that almost nobody would agree.

As was said before, a higher threshold would be optimal. The smaller parties wouldn't like it but the bigger parties would only gain and so would have an incentive

Based on the administrative subdivisions they use there (I forget what they were called).

We're in agreement.  The Israelis need to borrow a lesson from the Germans...it took a pre-existing party framework, a split in one of the large parties, and a large protest vote for the Left Party to become viable in Germany.  It should take fairly large disruptions to make important political parties.

It isn't, but on the last page we were discussing various electoral methods for Israel, and this is what I'd support.

We're a little over two weeks from the election to replace Olmert; has anyone seen a poll, or something like that, to indicate who's likely to win?

If Obama wins do you think Israel may feel emboldened to unilaterally take on Iran on its own?
