Took the decision to resign in order to 'clear his name' after his undeclared donations were referred to the Met.

Surprising; I'd sort of assumed that he'd try to stick it out until being sacked. Must have read him wrong.

after his undeclared donations were referred to the Met.

Which is o/c completely absurd (though it might have been technically necessary on the part of the Electoral Commission), though really it's a seperate issue. The powers of the Electoral Commision need sorting out urgently; from what I remember of what they can do over matters like this it's either a slap on the wrist (which is hardly a punishment) or calling in the police (which is ridiculously heavy-handed).

This was the type of stuff I was referring to when I meant "what should I know?"  Tongue

We discussed this today in class.
