This is the place to discuss the 2008 State of the Union address as it unfolds.  Even though this is in the US General Discussion board, go ahead and discuss how it affects the 2008 presidential race.

I will say this right off the bat so I can just get it out there.

I am kind of saddened that this will be his last SOTU. Sorry but I like the guy. His second term has been nothing but a mess (besides the Supreme Court appointments) but I still believe he was a good President (considering the first term). Plus, this was the first President I really knew. I knew nothing about politics before 2000 and since Bush was the first political figure I was introduced to as an up and coming political junkie, I have a weird, sentimental connection. After eight years of anyone, we're all ready for someone new. I really believe that but I will still miss him.

Bush has been President for two-thirds of my life. Scary thought.

I am thankful for this thread.

There's a 99% chance I'll be Z'd out by 9:15 like I have been for most of his SOTU's.  Wink

Looking forward to your comments.

As most of you know, I still have some Republican leanings on social issues, mainly, and as much as I am anxious for a new era in American History, I will miss him honestly.  I really did like his first term (really his first 3 years), although I did support Kerry in 2004.  I whole-heartedly supported Bush in 2000 and feel no regret about doing so, because he was the right man for the job at the time.

I have always liked Bush as a person.  He seemed to be an honest and decent man.  I may have disagreed with his policies during his last 4 1/2 to 5 years in office, but I have always loved and adored the man.  I would sincerely have loved to have had lunch with him.  Call me Republican all you want, and I am not, but I just really, really liked the man.

Like you, Phil, I also have some sentimental connection with Bush.  He was the first president (and first politician, period) that I actually cast a ballot for, that being in the year 2000 at the age of 18 yrs 6 1/2 months.  I didn't vote in the primary that year, because I was still 17 at primary time.

Bush has been the president for nearly 30% of my life, by the time he leaves office.  I will be 3 months from being 27 years old.

Look at Obama walking in. I can't wait until Mr. Bigshot has to fade into simply being a lowly Senator.

Bush has done far more damage to the Republican Party than Clinton, Obama, Casey or the former nominee, Kerry, could ever hope to do.

I've already got tears starting to well up.  This is the last SOTU with the first president of my adulthood.
