OK, the question here: How many counties that voted for Goldwater voted for Gore, and how many that voted for Mondale or McGovern voted for Bush?

Through my intitial search I found Greenlee county Arizona voted for Mondale and Bush. It turns out that the county's voting population has declined since 1984.

There are many counties in the South that voted for Goldwater and Gore.

I just found a McGovern-Bush example. I doubt there are that many more. Carroll county Iowa did. So did three counties in inland Northern California. Eastern SD is another region that has switched.

I've known of quite a few in Minnesota that voted for both McGovern and Bush, Stearns, Red Lake, Nobles, Morrison, Mahnomen and some others, but I know they're quite rare elsewhere. That's why I was I wondering.

Perhaps the most changing county I've found is DeKalb, Georgia. It went from 57% Goldwater to 70% Gore.

That explains part of it, but DeKalb county has taken a sharp turn to the left. In 1988, Dukakis only won it 50%-49%.

25 counties in MS alone voted Goldwater and Gore. The most outstanding example is Jefferson CO With  94/80% for Goldwater and 81.75% for Gore!

side note:

this map should kill any claims Minnesota is trending GOP. As it shows, Mondale actually won more counties than he did in 1984. He lost this time because he was beat by very wide margins in the outer suburbs (note the 4 dark blue counties bordering Hennepin on the west side). While Bush carried all suburban counties outside of Hennepin and Ramsey in 2000, it was very close, Nader making up the difference in most of them that aren't those 4. Coleman and Pawlenty both had lots of appeal to suburban voters (primarily because they were from the metro area), and there is no reason to expect Bush to do as good as they did.
