Maybe Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal, Jeb Hensarling, or Marsha Blackburn.

Palin just won't happen. She's only been Governor for a year.

And Jindal even less. Everyone needs to shut up about him.

John Thune seems to fit this bill.  He is a little younger than Obama (they were both born in 1961), and he has strong credentials as a conservative.

Yeah but Jindal served as a Congressman at least. I don't think either of them is likely.

How I see it is a younger VP candidate might persuade moderates concerned about age.  The strong conservative will motivate conservatives to actually go out and vote (I know plenty of Republicans who aren't sure whether they're voting or not).  This would only help McCain gain votes, and I don't see how it would cause a loss of votes.

Wouldn't a very young politician (such as Palin or Jindal, though I know they're unlikely) just further highlight McCain's old age?

McCain is faced with a very tough balancing act.  Picking a more conservative VP would help with conservatives, but its going to likely hurt him among Moderates as it will play into the Democratic hands that McCain isn't the independent minded maverick he use to be and is now a party line conservative Republican.

Palin and Jindal would not be great choices at this time, just like Webb wouldn't be a good choice for Obama.

Someone young, but come on, lets find someone in atleast their second term people

People who are deciding between the Dem and McCain aren't going to be paying attention to the VP as much, but the ticket in general, which will look younger if a younger VP candidate is chosen.  Having a strong conservative will help motivate conservatives not sure about McCain get excited about the ticket and go vote.

Are you referring to Governors or congressmen/women?

Condi would be a good choice, but it won't happen.  She wouldn't abandon her Secretary of State post to run for VP.

Well, he needs somebody younger just in case 1) he dies or 2) becomes mentally incapacitated

I tend to think of McCain pretty much the same way as Augustus did Agrippa. Able man just too old. McCain in 2008 makes Bob Dole look sprightfully young, by comparison, back in 1996 - and he was older

Whether he picks a right wing whackadoo or not, I don't know

Is there a reason why neither Sanford nor Pawlenty is mentioned here?
