let's pretend romney pulls the ultimate poltical upset and beats ted kennedy in 1994.

his voting record is moderate (just like he campaigned).  he votes against the clinton impeachment.

would he have been a serious candidate for president in 2000?

keep in mind the mitt of 94 was much different than the mitt we all know and love of 2008.

Wouldn't have stood a snowball's chance in hell of winning the primary.

1.  he would have had money.

2. he would have been 'the man who beat ted kennedy'.  practically a hero among the right.

1-And he has that now and is still unlikely to beat McCain
2-Is that going to allow Bob Casey to ever win a Democratic primary?

He and McCain would just end up splitting the Independent/Moderate Republican. Which gives us the same result, George W. Bush as the Republican nominee for president.

Senator Romney builds a credible record in the U.S. Senate.  He defeats Texas Governor George W Bush and Arizona Senator John McCain to win the Republican Presidential nomination.

Romney picks reformist Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating for Vice President.

After eight years of Democratic administration, marked by scandal, Sematpr Mitt Romney and Governor Frank Keating go on to defeat Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joe Lieberman in a close election.

In two blows to Gore's chances, after defeating Massachusetts icon Ted Kennedy in the Senate election, Massachusetts goes with their Senator for President, and Romney also takes his birth state of Michigan.

MA? LOL.

I concur with Xahar. Mitt Romney dosen't win MA. Likewise if Bill Weld ran for President, say in 1996. That wouldn't have happened.
