McCain in 2008, Dole in 1996.

Senior statesmen of the party.

It was "their turn" to be the nominee.

Anything alike?

Please discuss.

He just needs to fall off a stage to complete the comparison.

That is a hilarious line.  Good work.

But I believe McCain is a much more substantial Presidential candidate than was Dole.

Dole also had the misfortune of running against Perot (Who I think may have drawn more Republican votes in 1996, as a proportion, than he did when he drew about evenly in 92 because Dole was seen as a librul)....and Clinton at a time when Clinton was unbeatable...

John McCain isn't going to lose to Hillary Clinton by nine percentage points. So, no.

No, he isn't. Dole had the entire establishment behind him from the beginning, and he was well like within the party. McCain won't lose as badly as Dole did to Clinton, either.

Not really. Reagan had also ran several times before and was old when he won in 1980. Doesn't mean Reagan, Dole and McCain have much in common. Dole was a party stalwart who was very much in with the GOP. McCain of course is much more controversial than all the others. I also don't see how it is McCain's turn to be the nominee. Back when he got trashed in the 2000 primary, when his campaign almost gave up in August or when prominent RR-figures said they would never vote for him. Doesn't really strike me as the inevitable "due" candidate.

Only age wise. There's one difference of course. Dole in 96, at the age of 73, looked more like he was 65; McCain, on the other hand, coming up 72, looks like he's pushing 80

But by how much? And what about the diaper issue?
