Not really. Reagan had also ran several times before and was old when he won in 1980. Doesn't mean Reagan, Dole and McCain have much in common. Dole was a party stalwart who was very much in with the GOP. McCain of course is much more controversial than all the others. I also don't see how it is McCain's turn to be the nominee. Back when he got trashed in the 2000 primary, when his campaign almost gave up in August or when prominent RR-figures said they would never vote for him. Doesn't really strike me as the inevitable "due" candidate.
