I've been reading comments on Marc Ambinder's two entries about possible McCain veeps, as well as speculation elsewhere.  What are the most unrealistic ideas you've read so far that are serious?  (No Chuck Norris/Sly Stallone/Oprah/Bill Clinton jokes, please.)

For McCain: Carly Fiorina, Steve Forbes (even if he was a presidential contender in 2000)

For Obama: Colin Powell

Edit: There sure are a lot of suggestions of figures from the corporate world.  Now, McCain is no Romney, but does he really need to placate the Wall Street/big business Republicans?

I guess Bayh isn't unrealistic so much as stupid. We'd lose a senate seat for someone who would add nothing to the ticket

I've actually heard someone suggest Lincoln Chafee for the Democrats. I've also heard Michael Steele for the Republicans.

Indiana's electoral votes would be a possibility.

Doubt it.  Indiana is a solid GOP state and I doubt Bayh could shift the state to Hillary.

At best a 54-46 loss for her.

Right, and John Edwards was a brilliant VP pick because he would make Bush go on the defensive in North Carolina.

If by "possibility" you mean "not a possibility" then yes, you'd be correct

You are aware that Indiana has only went Democratic once in the last 58 years?

To be fair, there's quite a large difference between the popularity of Bayh in Indiana and Edwards in North Carolina.

There is also a difference between Indiana and North Carolina. NC was what, 12 point difference in 2004. IN was 20

Is it that far fetched that he could still help in other parts of the Midwest? Like Ohio?

Call it what you will, but I hear rumours that both sides are considering Atlasian Senator Speed of Sound. Wink

I was at CPAC today. He helped out McCain big time. Now I am no big fan of Newt so I'm not saying this out of admiration: I think he might be considered. Would he want it? Would he take it? Who knows. I do know, though, that is was by far the most respected (even beloved) conservative among the fanatics that are giving McCain a hard time.

Well, there's Frist, DeLay, or Allen.  They're not as unlikely candidates as Powell for Obama, but they're dinos whose stars have fallen in the eyes of the electorate and the media.

If Edwards hadn't undergone a mid-life crisis from 2005 onwards and remained the pro-war mildly populist candidate he was in 2004 (and had been treated in the way that Lieberman was in 2006) that wouldn't have been a bad choice. It would have made a lot of more sense that those suggesting that McCain needs to pick Huckabee/Allen/Santorum/Gingrich/Sanford/Barbour otherwise the Republican right will vote for Hillary or Obama.

The only flaw with that argument is that Edwards would probably be the Democrat nominee if he hadn't drifted off into left field.
