Why did John McCain only get 4% of the vote in the 2000 Republican Iowa caucuses, finishing below Bush, Forbes, Keyes, and Bauer?

Maybe he didn't campaign much there. Iowa isn't really his kind of state, is it?

I don't see why alan Keyes would do better than him.

Well, Bush, Forbes, Keyes, and Bauer did better than him, and I don't know why. There has to be a reason.

McCain did largely ignore the Iowa caucuses to focus on the New Hampshire primary. It paid off for him big time. You can read about it at an archived version of Politics1.com's McCain 2000 page (

).

It's interesting that Clark and Lieberman attempted to follow that same strategy this year. Clearly 2004 was not like 2000 in the primaries.

I wouldn't be so sure. In 2000 the winner in Iowa became the eventual nominee. Just like this year...

McCain skipped the caucus, and having actually recieved support was quite an accomplishment. The Lieberman startegy didn't work because he was already out of it, and for a while would lose support where he campaigned. Clark was a great campaigner here in NH (so was Edwards). He was the victim of the news story of the 2 week long 4-way race story in Iowa. He did miserably in 2004. He also stopped airing his effective biography ads which was a pathetic mistake of his campaign.
