Local television in Atlantic Canada can broadcast results when their polls closes. Somebody who is in the US and who see the results and publishes them before 10:00 PM EDT can't be prosecuted, I think. But I'm not sure.

I, and any American with cable, should be able to get results from the CBC as soon as polls close in Newfoundland. I can obviously post them without fear of prosecution, but can those in Canada read them without violating the law?

Which CBC do you get? If you get CBC Vancouver then there's no point.

CSPAN is simulcasting CBC's coverage here in the US. Presumably they'd broadcast CBC's coverage as provided for Newfoundland residents, although perhaps not.

They will probably use on-line CBC coverage who can't say results before 10:00PM EDT.

In 2006 they broadcast the entirety of the CBC coverage, so I assume they will again this year.

I will not talk until 10:00 PM, if I talk.

Elections Canada is a control freak.

They presumably used a version that wouldn't break any laws.

I don't think two hours patience hurt anybody.

They certainly won't hurt me because I'll be asleep then. Cheesy

Well, I have voted.

Elections Canada didn't know where I was supposed to vote, so I had to make a trip to the returning office, which is only a block away. I guess, since my postal code is just businesses, it wasn't listed.

I was able to vote by just showing them my Rogers bill and some ID. I had to return a few hours later to vouch for my room mate so he could vote. He had no proof of address, so he and I both had to swear an oath.

Which procedure you then repeated at every polling station in the Ottawa metro area? Wink

Elections Canada is a fascist, stupid little organization that deserves to die.

I hope somebody that doesn't live in this fascist country can publish the results without having to wait until 9:30 or 10, whatever time it is.

But alas,  that would get me in deep trouble. And would require some manipulation of some documents.  They do ask you your previous address, so I am assuming they cross reference these things. I could've voted in Ottawa South, for example because I'm on the voters list there.

This isn't the fault of Elections Canada. They only follow the Electoral Law. Complain to your MP after the election.

Off to bed now. See thee all in a few hours, I hope.

Look at the Results Thread for where to post things until that thread be opened (and when it should be opened if I decide to ignore my alarm).

Nos da.

It's actually kind of nice now that I think about it. Only the Atlantic Provinces will have closed at that point, and we'll be getting instant results from them rather than waiting around for an hour while they count.

Polls have closed in Newfoundland and Labrador. Is the ABC movement a success? Elections Canada won't let us know.

OK, sorry, I'm thoroughly confused by the discussion of when results will be released.  It sounds like people are saying that results will released in local media (such as local TV stations) as soon as the polls close in a given province, but that it's illegal to transmit those results to other provinces as long as voting is still going on?  How the heck is that practical?  Surely with internet, telephones, etc., if the results are being broadcast in one media market, they'll leak out to the rest of the world??  Can someone explain this?

Your understanding is correct. They can't monitor everything perfectly, but they do prosecute anyone who they catch spreading results into provinces where voting is still open.
