I met Tim Walz many times before he was in Congress. He frequently hung out at the local DFL HQ.

But you haven't met Hart? I assume you'll be volunteering for her this year so you should be able to meet her. I should be out around her area about two times this year and I'm hoping to volunteer a few hours for her.

I've only met politicians: Mark Pryor (I'm friends with his son), Blanche Lincoln (I go to school with her sons), Jon Tester, Mark Warner, and Tim Kaine.

EDIT: I've also met Mike Henry, a writer on Family Guy.

I'm gonna try to volunteer as much as I can for her.  Great that you can come out here and lend your support!

I talked with Wesley Clark at the Reagan National Airport. At the time, I was half-eating a pastry from Cinnabon. Despite all his great fitness talk, his eyes were mostly direct at my glazed cinnamon roll. I tried to ask him about his views on China's economic rise, but the former NATO Supreme Allied Commander seemed more inclined to talk about a common desert item.

What a strange world....

Dick Gephart, Carnahan's kid who replaced him.  By 'meet' I mean I shook their hands and said 'thanks for the good work'.

Somebody I know met Sarkozy in Riyadh. He told him "we're proud of you" and he said "thank you". I would've said "dude, chill out".

I met Martin O'Malley when he was running for Governor. I asked him about gay marriage, and he gave me a pretty noncommittal answer.

I met Steve Young once at Costco. It was when I was 4, so my memory of it is pretty fuzzy.

Last Wednesday I met Eleanor Clift, she's a very pleasant lady. I have also met some other famous people, but I didn't actually get to sit down and talk to them for 20-minutes like when I met Ms. Clift.

Oh she's great!  I used to be terribly pained to watch her get shouted down by those bullies on the MacLaughlin Show.

Met?  Lots.  Being a journalist has its advantages.

From Politics...

Dick Cheney.  (I attended a press availability with him in 1992 when he was campaigning here for the Reverend Rick Hawks, a local televangelist who was challenging then-Congresswoman Jill Long (now, Jill Long-Thompson) for her seat.)

Dan Quayle.  (He used to be my Congressman. I was part of the gaggle in Huntington, Indiana when he was named Papa Bush's running mate.)

Dan Coats.  (He replaced Quayle in the House, then in the Senate when Quayle became VP.)
Richard Lugar (my best friend worked for him until recently)

Evan Bayh

Jill Long-Thompson

Al Gore (He came to stump for Jill in 1989 when he was a Senator and she was in a special election.)

Mark Souder

Paul Helmke

Gerald Ford.  (He spoke at the opening and dedication of the new Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne.  I didn't actually get to talk to him because he didn't take questions, but I did shake his hand.  He was one strong man.  Even in his 80's, you could tell he played football.)

Harold Washington

Randall Terry  (A little wimp of a man.  But it's scary how his followers worshiped him.)

James Dobson

Sports...

Mike Singletary
Andre Dawson
Bob Feller
Jim Harbaugh

Ironically, I have lived and done news in Indiana for 20 years.  And I have never met Larry Bird, Lou Holtz, Reggie Miller, Don Mattingly or Bobby Knight!

Entertainment...

Mariette Hartley (I can't think of a single other Hollywood or music type I have met.  I interviewed her about a breast cancer fundraiser she was in on in Fort Wayne.  I never had trouble finding reporters willing to cover celebs, so I usually sent one of them.)

My wife sat behind John Schlitt of the bands, Head East and Petra on an airplane once.  That's about it!

Religion...

George Beverly Shea  (One of the most wonderful hymn singers ever!)
Jim Wallis (Founder of Sojourners)
Tony Campolo
Joseph Cardinal Bernadin
Francis Cardinal Arinze
Dr. Erwin Lutzer (Superb expository preacher.)
Ravi Zacharias

Journalism/News...

Bob Schieffer

Probably some others I have forgotten. I've been blessed, but for the most part -- the most interesting people I have met have been lesser known authors, musicians, journalists, politicians, clergy and so forth. Not household names, but folks with lotsa good things to say.

In my whole life, Excluding rock concerts and in rough chronilogcal order:

1.  Brandy, 1990s R&B singer, Universal Studios, CA
2.  Jerome Bettis, football player, Ramstein Air Base, Germany
3.  Dee Snider, former lead singer of Twisted Sister, at Europa Park germany
4.  Peter Gallagher, guy from the OC, at Borders bookstore in Manhattan
5.  Patrick Swayze, at the same exact Borders bookstore couple weeks later
6.  Giada DeLauerentis, hot host from "Everyday Italian", NYC
7.  Jeanine Garofolao, walking down the street, NYC
8.  David Gregory, dude from MSNBC, NYC
9.  Trey Anastasion, lead singer of Phish, NYC
10.  Chris Matthews, DC
11.  Wesley Clark
12.  Jack Kemp,
13.  Al Sharpton, at Reagan National airport in DC, hes a really short dude
14.   Sam Donaldson, of ABC News
15  Rob Garza, of Thievery Corporation, shared a cab with him in DC
16.   Martin Scrocese, dined right next to us at Neyla's in Georgetown
17.  Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, at a club in Tokyo, Japan.  His entourage was right next to our table, but he spent the whole night making out with his girlfriend
18.  Most recently: Last month, Walter Mondale, at Reagan National Airport, all alone walking with his luggage.  Didn't speak to him.  It was kinda funny, because you would think a former Vice President would have some sort of Secret Service protection.   He looked really old, and I felt really sorry for him for some reason.
19.  Oh!  and I forgot to mention:  just last weekend, Rick Santorum and his wife at the Mayflower Hotel in DC.  One of his staffers was having a wedding.

The two best places in DC to randomly run into famous politicos, in my opinion, are Reagan National Airport and the Pentagon City Mall.
