Moderate confirmation expected
The final vote on Sen. Moderate’s (NLC-D2) nomination as SoFA is expected shortly. Recent declarations of intent to vote in favour by Senators Jake (i-D4) and hughento (NLC-MW) indicated that the nomination is likely to pass easily. As yet only Sen. Verily (NLC-NE) has indicated that he will not vote in favour, but shall abstain in protest of the President’s actions surrounding the nomination.

Just FTR, I will be abstaining on my own confirmation vote.

LOL, what a clueless clown.
I wouldn't go as far as to call Xahar a clown, but has he seen the Pacific legislature lately?

Funny, I actually consider the Pacific legislature to be one of the best, second now perhaps to the Northeastern one.

Even if it does nothing but regularly dispatch pure liquified crazy, at least it's doing something.

Bitter? Not really; I have so many other options.

Yeah, uh....good luck with that.

The best thing to happen to the JCP in ever.  (By default, but still.)

What is? Me?

Yuh huh.  And you better go get those other votes to show for you.  You're tied with None of the Above.

Now 'None of the Above' is leading by a 75–25% margin.

Curiously, should no one eligible for the new run-off file, it appears that Governor Jesus is allowed to just plain appoint someone to the post.

Now hold on... I'm not the biggest fan of Phil politically and disapproved of his actions during the Trondheim Affair. But how is vetoing something going against a unity pledge? If he disagrees with a bill, he should veto it. It's his job. There's a significant difference between being friendly and working together with rivals in the Senate and getting on your knees any time they want something.

Hard to be a unifier when the Senate splits 50/50 on something you oppose.

Honestly, the bill in question effectively decriminalized every drug under the sun, many of which have extensive ties to organized crime / gang activity.  Had I been in the Senate I would have voted against, and personally think the President made the right call on this one.

I'm not sure there's a way to find any common ground between Keystone Phil and the Senate on this one, considering the President's past votes on drug-related issues.

And while the Senate is free to try and override the veto, it should be clear that the votes are not there for the bill in the current form.

I know there was a little bit of confusion about it earlier, so I do want to reiterate—all currently registered Atlasian voters are eligible to vote in this weekend's Special Election.

Indeed, though both were all but guaranteed to have been elected in the April general election.

Well, technically, it was the Atlasian Senate that made the policy decision to eliminate by-elections, not I.  I was simply following the letter of the law as I interpreted it.

Let's blame this whole thing on Jas for not completely amending the constitution to make Sections 18 and 19 of the PRA legal.  Smiley

I too assume that Wixted, Trondheim, and Afleitch will all gain enough votes to win election based on the sheer number of first preferences they'll received, with the remaining seats going to any combination of EarlAW, Rocky, Sensei, Bacon King, or possibly Jake, depending on how conservatives choose to first-preference their ballots and how loyal NLC members are to the recommended fourth and fifth preferences.

(Rocky will do well based on being 4th and/or 5th preferenced by members of both the NLC and PLP plus a scattering of higher-level support elsewhere based on personal friendships; Sensei and Earl are good candidates based on their high PLP preferencing and lower preferencing from other non-PLP liberals; Bacon King and Jake look good based on a lower preferencing from NLCers but higher preferencing from conservatives.  I generally assume that Culture King will lose re-election out of lack of favorable preferencing by anyone to the right of the JCP (also factoring in burned bridges with the PLP), and Hashemite too may lose out based on a lower preferencing by NLC members and lower support among other subgroups against fellow competitors for the fourth or fifth slots.  Happy Warrior will struggle for the same reason Hashemite will, or so I predict.)

South Park Conservative had a strong showing in the special election, though that was primarily due to his actually being from District 4 (same goes for Lewis—had Colin been a resident of D4 there is no question that he would have won the race, probably handily).  He's likely to get preferenced solely by conservatives, and then probably not high enough to actually beat out Jake or Bacon King for the fifth slot just based on PR-STV mechanics.

Mr. Secretary do you even think Xahar will outpoll King of the Bench Press by a kilometre? Tongue

Since Xahar is not a candidate, no.

Senate Mid-Terms

The Examiner has decided to wait until the official results are published before analysing the election.

I appreciate that.

It's been quite slow for a few days now.
It's likely things will pick up shortly.

I think Alcon was pretty much the only JCPer to vote for Jas/Moderate over the Keystone Phil ticket.

My fault... since there's no longer a conflict of interest, I should be the one administering the runoff booths.

Torie, who becomes the first Atlasian to defeat an incumbent JCP office holder.

I was an incumbent JCP office holder when I was defeated by five Atlasians, four of them not JCP members.

Perhaps "Pacifican" should be added?

Or an asterisk that Lewis was not originally elected as a member of the JCP.

President Ebowed Gets Down to Business

In contrast to the Senate’s comatose state, President Ebowed has decided to cut them out of the loop and get on with a one man legislating mission, issuing no fewer than 7 executive orders in quick succession dealing with a range of issues from capital punishment to faith-based initiatives to asbestos to safe injection sites. As of yet the Senate (or indeed nobody at all) has made no response.

You will likely see an official response coming sometime around noon on July 4.

The White House will be releasing the names of the SoFA nominee and the Supreme Court Justice nominee a little bit later today.
