...shame that, in some areas, it's almost entirely meaningless. U.S unemployment statistics are even more of a fiddle than unemployment statistics in most other countries. Which is impressive.

There are also some odd trends in place:

Manufacturing and timber are going down the tubes.  The places that rely on tourism and timber in Minnesota are going down the poo hole but the farming areas and mining areas are doing really well.  Some places in southwestern MN have less than 2% unemployment.

My county has 6% unemployment which is impressive considering that we have a large Indian reservation with extremely high amounts of unemployment.  Anybody can get a $7/hour job here!

Why would a jobless person stay in an area with 10% unemployment rates when there are places with 1%?

That map is really misleading. The breadbasket is virtually deserted to begin with. However, go Florida!

Nobody knows why a jobless person would stay in a horrible job market?  Not even any lame excuses like "it's home!" or "we're to poor to move" or "I'll miss my family"?

Just the dumb ones.  The smart Republican states tend to have the lowest rates (unless they also have a lot of union jobs).

Yay for Michigan being number one......

Of course, I'll be likely joining the ranks of the unemployed in about 4 months.

Call me crazy, but I think not having any money is a legitimate excuse not to move. Unless you enjoy sleeping on park benches.

No money = can't move.

That's pretty much true anywhere.  Now try to live on that.  The dirty little secret of capitalism is that is must be designed and implemented by the State to keep subsistence just out of reach of some people.

The thing is, minimum wage was never meant to be a wage to be lived on, especially for any length of time.

Well that is foolish policy I'd like to see rectified.  And anyway I never mentioned 'minimum wage', which is a liberal policy.  I was talking about the iron rule of capitalist states that there must be a reserve army of unemployed.

Hawaii has a ridiculously low unemployment rate and everywhere there are signs saying, "help needed" or "hiring now". But wages are low for the cost of living. At least in Michigan or Kentucky, you can live a pretty cheap life.
