That was close.  I almost voted yes/yes because I thought the first question was whether we supported same-sex marriage.

I suppose civil unions as a current compromise, but in truth I more support same-sex marriage as a legal equal to opposite-sex marriage.  I see absolutely no reason why two people who are in love and who are committed to each other cannot get married.  Marriage is not just about having kids as some claim; if it was, people would also be attempting to ban infertile people or people who don't want kids from marrying.

People like Britney Spears who have 52-hour marriages are the ones who cheapen marriage.  Don't blame homosexuals.

I agree with Gabu. There's no reason to sully our Constitution with such a bigoted law.

No/No
I am opposed to civil unions as being something that undermines marriage more than same sex marriage ever could.  I am ambivelent on whether same sex marriages should be sanctioned by the state, but I am vehement that the issue, like most social issues, should be settled at the state level (or even local level) rather than the federal level and would favor a constitutional amendment to ensure that would be the case, but not one for a blanket ban on the practice.

No/Yes.

I am an active, practicing homosexual, and I am PROUD OF IT.

Just FYI, I have a boyfriend of 2+ years who is a staunch Republican, and has every intention of voting for Bush.  I love him anyways, and we agree to disagree on politics.

Don't mean to be rude, but where can you find a homosexual Republican these days? The 2 words just don't seem to mix.

They are rare, but they do exist.

They aren't rare... much less rare than black Republicans.  I saw one survey that held the number around 30% of gays are Republican, and somewhere in the 20's voted for Bush in '00.   Unfortunately, I don't expect those numbers to get any higher at the moment.

Given Bush's putting forward the Marriage Amendment, can you really be surprised at that?

That's the thing.... Bush didn't put it forward!  I remember reading an article from Bob Novak and a number of other pieces bitching that Bush wasn't supporting it.   He stook up against it saying that it was "unnecessary" for the longest time.  But the pressure was too much for him to bear and he caved.  I'm sorry he did, but at least I know in my heart that he really doesn't want to do it.  This is politics, and I realize that good men sometimes have to support bad ideas in order to win.   Nevermind that most evangelicals aren't bigots and have better things to occupy their time with than worrying what other people are doing in their bedrooms, but I guess that didn't factor into the political calculation. Who knows who we will go after next!  Those immoral left-handed people?  Those red-haired perverts?

At least good people like your boyfriend realize where the President's heart really stands on the issue, even though he isn't able to show it.

Given Bush's putting forward the Marriage Amendment, can you really be surprised at that?

Somebody who favors samesex marriage would mark No/No...somebody who favors banning it and civil unions would got Yes/No..

Whatever.  It doesnt matter whether he initiated it or not -and I'm not agreeing that he didn't, just saying its irrelevant.  You really cant expect to get the votes of gay America if you support this.  As for my boyfriend, my feeling is he can't help it, his parents didnt bring him up right.  Smiley

Aww, does he lack the parental love and affection that every child needs at an early age? Sad

It depends, really.  I explained my position for marking "no/yes" above: I do support civil unions as a current compromise since the majority of Americans don't support same-sex marriage, but not as a final place to stop.
