If Obama gets the nomination and loses to McCain, I think it's quite possible that he could get the nomination again in 2012. I don't feel that way about any other candidate.

If it happened, it'd be the first time a non-incumbent got a major party nomination consecutive times since Stevenson did it in '52 and '56.

Thoughts?

Nope, if he gets nomination and loses, it will be Clinton in 2012

Michelle already said that if he loses there wont be another run. To take her word on it or not...is the questionnn.

No.

I don't know exactly when, but I have little doubt that if Hillary Clinton loses the nomination (or general if she gets the nomination) this year, she'll be the Democratic candidate again some time in the future...

If Obama wins the nomination but somehow manages to screw things up and lose in November...I sincerely doubt the Democrats will give him the luxury of a second chance (barring a Gore-style loss).  They may love him now (well, half of them at least), but they'll turn on him if he loses.  Does this mean Clinton would get the nod in 2012?  Probably not.

If Clinton gets the nomination & loses, Obama should have the 2012 nomination in the bag.

I think if McCain wins in 2008, regardless of who he beats, the Democrats will move back toward the DLC, possibly even more extreme than before (think Tony Blair) and Obama will not be seen as electable.

...or in the complete opposite direction, if Obama's loss is seen as a failure of the "let's reach out to independents" strategy.

No.

As much as I'd like to see Obama run in 2012, I doubt he will if Obama loses to McCain in 2008. I can forsee Obama, nor Hillary Clinton for that matter, not contesting the 2012 Democratic nomination and I would expect Mark Warner to run and win the Nomination.

Not even thinking about it. I'd prefer Obama to win the Democratic nomination in 2008 and win the presidency in 2008. Then do a darn good job as president and be re-elected in 2012 .... by a landslide Wink

I'll start thinking about 2012 if all doesn't go well in 2008

if he somehow isn't nominated this cycle he is the prohibitive favorite in 2012, at least to be nominated - think Gore in 2004 had he run.
