Initally i think a significant chunk of Obama support would be very reluctant to back Clinton, but as the general election wore on it's possible that the Democrat base would solidify around Clinton - but plenty of Obama's support has not come from the tradtional 'party base', furthermore '08 would not be like '04 in the sense it would not be a race to energise the respective party's bases.
Ultimatley, a greater number of independents and democrats will support McCain in a race against Clinton than in a contest involving McCain and Obama... at the same time, Nader is also likley to do better in such an election... having said that, the degree to which McCain and Nader would benifit from facing Clinton rather than Obama remains unclear and would depend to a signficant extent on the nature of the campaign as a whole.
