in fact strict control would probably lead to a surge in terrorism perpetrated by right-wing extremists.

It wouldn't be "terrorism" at that point. Sorry, try again. If the government tries to remove ones God given rights it is the right of the people to do whatever necessary to sustain said right.

States, I don't think that owning a piece of machinery is a "God given" right.   If it is I would have hoped He would have chosen something cooler like Jetpacks.

Then explain why the founders talked about natural rights. Sorry Patrick but self defense falls under that category.

Lief, quit trolling.

I do not believe that owning a gun is a "natural right"....but I do think it's logical to allow gun ownership to a reasonable degree.

Apparently though it's perfectly fine to trust them to have batons.

Perfectly fine?  His point in posting that image was that they can barely be trusted with batons either.

Quite so. Just imagine what would have happened during (for example) the Miners Strike if the police had guns. It was bad enough as it was, as that photo neatly shows...

Yeah, I don't trust the police.

Sorry, I was being a bit facetious, thought that was obvious. Tongue

Anywho, the fact is you aren't advocating that they shouldn't have batons. (or are you?) Better to use an example of when they misused guns. (of which there are plenty)

Also, you can't say for sure that it would have been worse if they had guns. It may have been, but it's entirely possible they may have exercised more restraint if they had lethal weapons. Or it could have been exactly the same and they would have stuck with batons and not used their guns. I'm not exactly familiar with the incident in question. If you want a valid comparison you should check on similar incidents where the police had firearms as an option and see what they did, preferably within a similar timeframe since attitudes towards large strikes and whatnot have changed over time.

Then explain why the founders talked about natural rights.

Because they wrongly thought natural rights exist.

Well you're a social communist, why should I care what you and your ilk think?

By that logic why should you care what anyone else thinks? Should he dismiss you as well if he disagrees with you?

Haha, a social communist.

You don't need to care, but on the same token, you want to be taken seriously by people, right? Helps to have an understanding of what you're arguing about.

Probably been mentioned here before but it's probably worth looking at what our gun laws actually are.

Love this little bit from wiki

'Following the awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games to London, the government announced that special dispensation would be granted to allow the various shooting events to go ahead, as had been the case previously for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. However, it was still illegal for Britain's top pistol shooters to train in England, Scotland or Wales. As a result, British shooters currently spend 20 to 30 days a year training in Switzerland, and receive no public sports funding because their events are considered illegal in the UK.'
