Comic Collecting

Back around 1998, I began collecting comic books. I remember my father's friend, a cop he works with, gave me a huge, long box of them. My uncle is also a huge collector and has so many old, expensive titles. I collected massively around 1998-2001...and then slackened off. I really hadn't touched my comics much in probably six years or so...but I have lately, even adding an old Spider-Man in the Summer of '07. I have a few hundred comic books, and in the coming years I hope to expand a few titles with older, better quality, expensive books. I also hope to sell some of my current titles and maybe even get them graded to increase their value.

Does anyone here collect comics?

Congratulations on having a hobby.  I have a friend who graduated from college in 2004 who lives in Colorado Springs that collects comics, as does our mutual friend who lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma and another mutual college friend who is currently living in the island nation of Haiti.

Having a hobby like that can be very constructive.  Its a very respectable hobby.  Hopefully, it can be a nice fill-in should you have a bunch of time to kill with nothing else to do.

He went there as a missionary in 2004, and ended up getting married to one of the native girls.  They're still living there as far as I know and I just talked to him via Fantasy Baseball Draft this past Sunday.

I own a half dozen or so that Kevin Smith has done.  Bluntman and Chronic and a brief story arc for the Green Arrow.  I enjoy the characters like Batman and Superman, but I've never been a comic collector.  Baseball and Hockey cards when I was a teenager though.  I still got them.

So? I have a collection of comic books. What's wrong with that?

I don't see anything wrong with it, personally.

Of any reason to poke fun at Naso, this isn't one of them.

I don't collect comics, except some Star Wars ones that are really good, but I wait until they are in trade paperback form.

I do read manga though. Manga>>>>>>>>American Comics.

Agreed. But mostly because American Comics are about 90% superhero comics. I wish there was more stuff out there like 100 Bullets or Walking Dead.

I have a couple copier-paper boxes full of comics, but I haven't really stopped to read one in ages.

My dad has a massive collection of Amazing Spiderman, about 250 issues, from #4 onwards.  I used to be a massive collector, especially Uncanny X-Men, but I've slacked off in recent years.  Now, the only time I buy a large number is in September, when I go to the annual Baltimore convention, and spend $200-300 on older books.

I also read Batman, but because of the value of the early books, it would be a long time before I could afford to buy those, so I'm focusing on the X-Men collection; when I complete that, I'll turn to Batman.

Nothing. I collect them as well. I'm more of a DC guy than a Marvel guy though. My brother is into Marvel.

Have you read "Watchmen" Naso?

No but I am curious as to whether you were born an asshole or if this was a recent development.

Well, if you are only going to own one, that would be the one to own.

Everyone on here (or anyone at all interested in politics) should read it. It should be required reading in high schools as far as I'm concerned.

Don't mind me, I'm Canadian. I don't know anyone who collects comics. It must be an American thing.

No, I haven't. I have a bunch of 25 year old DC Action Comics, all of which are in Near Mint/Mint condition. Since I was never a huge DC fan, I wouldn't mind grading those, and then selling them for top notch.

I used to read comics alot more when I was a young teen, but I only really take them out once in a while, yesterday was the first time I took them out since Summer. Back around 1999/2000, I read a few graphic novel comics called "Somerset Holmes" from 1983, a one-shot type deal about a woman who loses her memory and becomes hunted by a killer.

I was never able to find all six issues.

Is anything not '80s related with you, Naso? Seriously.  Tongue

It's actually a very good comic. I recieved it in 1998...and I didn't say to myself "OH MY GOD...THE 80s WERE ONLY 9 YEARS AGO!" It just happened to be from 1983.
