Depends on the 14-year old in question. When I was that age I had no problem watching movies like that, but then I was already familiar with directors like Fassbinder and Lynch by the time I was 12. I was a rather jaded child.

Generally speaking, definitely not. I'm thinking not so much of the violence in itself but of the behaviour of Plainview. He kills people in cold blood, he abandons his child for money...that's not stuff a kid should watch before he/she is able to take it in. Many probably do anyway, but I don't it does them any good.

I would've given TWBB a PG-13. Not too far off from Juno actually, which makes sense considering TWBB is a "soft" R and Juno is a "hard" PG-13. That puts TWBB closer to Juno than say Sin City or the Saw series and Juno closer to TWBB than something like Legally Blonde.
