If Mac reaches across party lines for his VP, assuming the one he picks accepts, who does Mac choose?

I know the obvious answer is Lieberman, but there may be others you have in mind.

He could pick Ben Nelson, too... or Gene Taylor.

I thought you wanted the name of a Democrat.

Just someone who is not a Republican.

Nelson won't do it. He's conservative, but he's a Democrat, and since he represents one of the most conservative states in the Union, I'd suspect his views are at least somewhat reflective of those of his constituents. If Nelson didn't defect when the Republicans held a commanding majority in the Senate and the Democratic party was written off as dead, he won't now.

Why would a RINO pick a Democrat as his running mate? This could only serve to further exacerbate the rift between McCain and the far-right GOP grassroots.

Zell Miller.  Free Republic likes him more than McCain.

No one, he needs his veep to appeal to core republicans moreso than independents and democrats at this point.

Harold Ford Jr
Mark Warner (ok, he's running for the Senate but even so)
Ken Salazar

FWIW, I also fully expect someone like Charlie Wilson to speak at the Republican convention.

Zell Miller would never be selected because of his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Zell Miller would never be selected because of his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Although this is true, it was curiously NEVER brought up when he gave the keynote address at the 2004 RNC.

anyway, McCain won't pick Miller. He's irrelevent now, about the same age as him, and his views, which have changed wildly over the course of his career (Miller is an even bigger flip-flopper than Kerry and Romney combined, but that's for another thread) have devolved into being reflective of 1950s Georgia. He might play well in the South, but he'd be toxic up north and out west.
