Suppose that John McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are all on a plane together campaigning before the convention, and the plane goes down.  Who would emerge to become the GOP nominee?

The party leaders would probably select someone like Newt Gingrich

Since a majority of the delegates at the convention will be McCain delegates (i.e., McCain loyalists), it would be whoever the McCainiac wing of the party wants....not sure who that would be.  Doesn't necessarily have to be anyone who ran this year.

Had McCain already announced a running mate at the time of his death?

I honestly do not know who the RNC would select to be their candidate, if this scenario was to occur in real life. Who knows? For all I know the RNC would select anybody from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to Tom Coburn in this scenario.

^^^

Most likely.  Similar experience in Congress.  Tends to push the edge on current Republican issues.  Seen as one not afraid to shake up Washington.

Ack. Sounds like a double Nightmare Scenario for the GOP.

I picture them drafting some young governor who ordinarily would have had to wait his turn, but now has nothing to lose from running with the full support of the party, no solid expectations of winning, and a job to go back to if he loses. Sanford, Pawlenty, maybe Rick Perry. State government will have closed up shop for the year in many states. It's also a good contrast with a Washington insider senator blah blah blah.

First class has the worst prospects for surviving a crash.

And if the same sort of thing happens to the Dems, does that mean Al Gore is back?

The only way Obama and Clinton would be lost in the same air crash would be if their planes collided in the skies.

As I said in the similar thread, it would go to Newt.

1)  Lets assume McCain's running mate was one of the two other guy on the plane.  As unlikely as it might seem, Clinton/Gore traveled together all the time in 1992.

2) This was actually inspired by a statement I made last night while we were leaving the Ron Paul event... "If McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Giuliani and Thompson all died before the convention, Ron Paul still wouldn't be the nominee."

I don't understand any Republican in power who would think this is a good idea. Who is Newt's base? This seems like as good an idea as running Jim Florio for Senate.

If this were to happen, the GOP would likely go for a popular two-term Governor.

John Huntsman?
Mike Round?
Rick Perry?
Mitch Daniels? (He's ahead in the polls)
Tim Pawlenty?

Beelzebush would do what he and Dick have been having wet dreams over -- suspend the Constitution and the election, blame the plane crash on a Democratic, left wing plot and convince the media and enough of the public that anyone who criticizes the move must therefore hate America and freedom.  Oh yeah.  And the troops...

I say this, of course, "tongue in cheek".

Sort of.

In that scenario then, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush becomes the presumptive nominee.  Tongue

Yeah, prolly.  Count Dickula could remain as VP.  And Beelzebush could be named Secretary of Defense AND Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

He is, after all, "The Commander Guy" and "The Decider".  What more could we ask?

He's only at 51% in the most recent poll. Is that "popular"?
