Looking at those numbers, I'd go to UVA.

Well, I went with MSU (yes, Harry, the proper MSU).  I had decided on Rochester on Tuesday, but my parents rather complicated things by essentially repeating really big numbers that I'd save by going to Michigan State.  My dad's in sales, so it was my decision in the end, but...

(btw, my numbers were assuming I'd spend three years at college.  Going to Brown or Swarthmore for four years would put me in $100k of debt, while Rochester, the lowest other than Indiana, would be "only" $40k)

In any case, I'm happy about where I'll be going, even if I'm less than pleased the way the decision came about.

In that case, we'll be seeing lots of this:

Will you be benevolent dictator of the Mideast now?

The first three schools are in a different league from the latter three. To have a reasonable chance of being accepted at any of the three, the applicant must be a very accomplished young person indeed. Without knowing more about the poster, it would be unwise to opine. The first three choices are all outstanding academic institutions, but very different. And is money just not a factor, a medium factor, or a major factor?

Swarthmore is for nerds and losers. UVA isn't bad, but Brown is better because you can be an elitist there. I'm having a hard time staying elite here at UNC-CH.

Hey, my mother went to Swarthmore!

Great decision. Why endure $100k in debt to go to a college that might not even be the right fit for you? A friend of mine turned down a full-ride to Pitt Honors for Dartmouth. He's now unhappy with the ethos of the school and realizes that he made a $200k mistake.

I took Rice over Duke for myriad reasons. While graduating with zero debt from Rice wasn't the chief motivation, I must admit that it played a role in my decision-making process.

Now that you've saved a lot of coin, you can sleep better at night knowing that you won't be caught in a debt spiral after grad school.
