...where should the Capital of the United States be?

Use whatever insane metrics you'd like, just be sure to state them.

For myself, I'll say Phelps County, Missouri, as it's currently the center of the US population. That's a fairly shallow measurement in the real world, but I needed an example. Your turns.

By the way I realize that if DC wasn't in DC it wouldn't be DC. Or whatever.

New York City. It would probably have stayed there if was not for the need to have the capitol in the "middle" and for that matter not within a state. It really makes sense if you think about it... UK=London, Germany=Berlin, USA=New York.

That would be great, make NYC not part of America but its own entity without congressional representation

We could cut Williamsburg or Richmond out and make it the Capital.

I was thinking either Williamsburg or Philly.  It would have to be somewhere in the original 13 states, because it would be difficult to justify moving our Capital often.

Philly wouldn't be a bad choice either; I'm just biased towards Virginia.

Eh? Moving it often?

I don't see a reason it should be in the original 13 states. My assumption going in to this that I probably should have stated more clearly was that we are choosing one now, and as if the current location did not exist.

A lot of foreigners already tend to make the same mistake about New York City as they do about Sydney and Toronto.

It would have to be a major US city, and not some rural backwoods or small town, since the type of people DC attracts would want culture, the arts, theater, nightlife, etc...

Manhattan is crowded as it is, moving the entire federal bureaucracy there would be insane.

Probably somewhere more in the geographic center.  I think Denver or Salt Lake City would be interesting choices, perhaps too far West, though.

Chicago would be nice.

Of all the cities in Ohio why Springfield?

Personally I would pick Omaha, Nebraska.  Its very geographically centric.  The approximate geographic center of the lower 48 lies roughly halfway along the Nebraska-Kansas border and Omaha is probably the closest major city to that location.

Having the capital in the biggest city is godawful idea. Dreadful for the rest of us.

Better to have it in either Richmond or Williamsburg, since Jamestown is basically a tourist area now.

Not as much, though, since William & Mary is there.
