Everything happens the same way that it did in real life.

Kennedy is assassinated in 1963 and Johnson becomes President. Everything goes the same in the Johnson presidency as it did in real life up to this point.

Johnson is nominated unanimously at the democratic convention in Atlantic City. He selects Hubert Humphrey for vice president. Bobby Kennedy still gives the emotional speech that he did in real life.

Nelson Rockefeller is nominated after a long primary battle with other republicans. A squeaker of a win in the California primary over Barry Goldwater throws the nomination to Rockefeller. Rockefeller is nominated on the first ballot at the GOP convention. He selects George Romney as his running mate.

George Wallace decides to run for President and he selects Curtis LeMay as his running mate.

Discuss with maps.

Simple, no way Johnson loses less than a year after the assassination. Rockefeller may have even done worse since I doubt he'd appeal to the South.

Curtis LeMay did his memory no favors by aligning himself with a segregationist.  It's a shame that he's remembered that way.

So LeMay was still a general under February 1, 1965.  I doubt he runs against his President as one of his generals.
