New Election: 1976 Missouri Referendum Open Primary Election Results

The amendment does this: "Repeals provision of Missouri Constitution which provides "Separate schools shall be provided for white and colored children, except in cases otherwise provided for by law."

42% voting against this in 1976 is still pretty sad. Although I think it's a lower percentage than the dissenters on this topic in Southern states in the 1990s/2000s.

On the same ballot was an amendment that authorized providing

1) services for the handicapped
2) nonreligious textbooks
3) transportation for all public and private elementary and secondary school children

It was seen as being a bit too friendly to parochial schools, and it went down 684818-463198

I haven't entered the county results onto anything, so I don't know how strong the Catholic/Protestant split is on this. But it looks like it went down 4 to 1 in a lot of counties.

Plus, these elections were held on the primary day. Where Democrats had a 2 to 1 edge in people picking a ballot. So.. that 42% is even more troubling.

Why yes, this does double as a map of "Where Catholics live in Missouri"

Did we ever do a thread on the 1996 referendum in Kentucky?

I know offhand it won in 115 of 120 counties (and I think I remember which ones it lost), but I don't think I've ever seen a map.

Which one was that?

It was the one that abolished the part of the state constitution that required segregated schools.

I think the only counties where it lost were Jackson, Laurel, Clinton, Monroe, and Martin.

Oh yeah, that feel-good do nothing measure (since that prevision had long ago been overturned by federal law).  As I recall I protested by not voting for or against the measure but leaving it blank on my ballot since it was a waste of time.
