New Election: 1992 Missouri Senatorial Democratic Primary Election Results

(note, I changed the script to support < 20% winner - quite a rare occurrence - although the blue < 20% and green < 20% are tough to distinguish). Dave)

Here's a summary of comments

#1: Due to the large number of counties won by a candidate who did not top 20%, a more complete map is here ( http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9062/mosenpri1992vc6.png )

#2: It took awhile to get these results since 7 of 14 candidates had their results released in the 1993-1994 Manual

#3: Yes, 7 of 14 candidates carried a county

#4: Rothman-Serot carried the Springfield, Columbia, and St. Louis media markets.

#5: Rothman-Serot really lagged badly in the Southeast and Northeast, where guys like Weber got some protest votes.

#6: Peacock really didn't have much of a base, neither did Bernstein.

#7: Coe got over half of her votes from the KC TV market, where she lived.

#8: Sutherland carried parts of the district he represented in the Missouri House, in the mid-1970s.

Ok, that's all. Gaze upon the most ridiculous statewide Missouri primary ever.

Weber wins Lewis County with less than 13 percent of the vote. Amazing.

That Lewis County result is even more amazing than Dodson inexplicably winning Mercer County (Dodson also got 25% in Johnson County, but he was born there).

The top 5 candidates were all from the St. Louis area, which should tell you a bit about how random the results in the Hannibal, Kirksville, Joplin, and Cape Girardeau markets are.

Fast-forwarding to the general here, this is really one of those seats that Democrats should have tried to link to Clinton's coattails much more heavily in 1992.  Having people like Gerri Rothman-Serot, Lynn Yeakel(PA), Bob Abrams(NY), and John Rauh(NH) in Senate would almost certainly have gotten universal health care.
