Restauraunts, bars, grocery stores, department stores, schools, a downtown shopping district, a university campus, and the largest freshwater lake in the world are all within easy walking distance of my home.

I thought you lived in Michigan not Siberia? Smiley

Anyway, I can walk to a McDonalds and to a couple of 3 parks.  If I want to walk a little further and down some pretty busy streets, I can get to grocery stores and gas stations and department stores and several more fast food places.

Within a few hundred yards:  a few bars, tons of restaurants, a metro stop, a grocery store, post office, an underground mall...and MODU's office.   Smiley

Yes - to the car (please imagine a rim shot and a laugh track)

At my old house, I could walk to school and a few small stores and other businesses easily, but there wasn't much to see. Living in the city, though not downtown and minutes away from the suburbs, offers plenty of commercial opportunities. Many small grocery and corner stores, restaurants, bowling alleys, a comedy club, hell, even a putt putt course. I usually drive, however.

Yes, I have a shopping center within walking distance. By a longer walk, there is a bank and post office.

It is an unfortunate trend that many new developments are not walker friendly.

I've noticed now that a lot of these developments don't even bother to build sidewalks anymore.

Yes, within a mile I have:

In the private sector: banks, bakeries, groceries, florist, barbers, restaurants (Italian and Mexican), fast food, ice cream, hardware, car repair, auto parts, doctor, dentist, and lawyers to name a few.

For public services there's city hall, the library, park district offices, fire station, schools, and the train station to the city.

Not bad for the a location in the suburbs an hour's drive form the city.

In Melbourne, no problems, and what I can't walk to I can catch public transport to, or wouldn't want to go. That said, I do like going for long drives with no destination in mind.

In Canberra, I live on campus, so yeah, easily. I think i've driven once this year in Canberra.

And unless you're a hoodlum, like J.J., you better be armed and have a bullet proof vest on in his section of Philly.  J.J. is one scary somebeach.   Wink

Downtown is 3 miles away.. an easy bike ride.. and you can get pretty much anything you need down there.

I just realized how country bumpkinish that sounded.  But to clarify--all of the groceries available downtown are organic.. and the side of the building has a mural painted on it of people happily working together in a communistic lakeside utopia!

Nowhere. Chipotle is about a 3 minute drive away, but a 30-40 minute walk.

You wouldn't last 10 minutes in J.J.'s neighborhood.

If he can I don't see why I can't and it's a red herring anyway.
