What exactly do Oklahomans do for fun? Praying? Cow tipping?
You can't actually tip a cow.  (at least not in the way people claim they tip cows)

Oklahoma is quite possibly one of the worst states in the union.(the other contenders for that are Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Utah and Idaho) It's like Texas without any of Texas's redeeming points.

Harry, Mississippi democrats are owned by the religious right. Any state where the more liberal party is owned by the reactionary religious right is not one I want to ever find myself near.

The Mississippi Democratic Party supports increasing education and higher education spending, aiding the poor, and universal health care.  You know, actual Christian stuff.

You ignore their positions on social issues. How telling.

It doesn't matter what the party says about abortion in its platform.  Abortion is legal anyway.

Talk like that will lead to the democrats being irrelevant due to having a platform consisting of giving the religious right whatever they want socially and pushing a socialist economic agenda.

It's the only way to win in Mississippi. That's a pretty darn good reason, huh?

Sounds good.  The Supreme Court will strike down anything too religious they do, and we can start pulling ourselves out of poverty.

So you basically admit that your strategy would lead to the dems dying as a party plus national disaster(Unfettered republican rule) until till some new movement replaces the dems?

Not at all.  The Supreme Court won't be forever packed by Republicans.  Obama will probably appoint 2-3 justices, and even if he loses, McCain will have to appoint moderates if he wants them approved.
I see no reason why the Mississippi Democratic Party would die as a party...we're finally starting to look up for the first time this decade.  We just took back the state legislature, and now have 3/4 of MS's Congressional seats.  In a few months, we'll probably have half of the US Senators from MS.

With the exception of gay issues, the religious fundies are correct on social issues.

If the fundies were correct on social issues, instead of being the poorest region of the nation Dixie would be the most prosperous part of the nation. Instead it's the Boswash corridor and the west coast urban centers that are the richest. I Wonder why that is. Wink

lingering effect of slavery, and the Republican Party conning the poor into thinking that abortion and gun rights are more important than economic programs.

Lingering effects of slavery such as heightened social conservatism and defending 'traditional values' being seen by the poor as more important than pro-poor economic measures. You just proved my point.

The fundies are obviously wrong on social issues, I didn't mean to imply that I think they're right.  But economic issues are more important, and they're issues we can win on.

So you want the dems to not win an election ever again due to the greens poaching alot of the core democrat coastal states because of your 'strategy' alienating the base?

Harry wishes to make the dems appeal to poor rural southerners as opposed to their traditional base. There's ways to make a new democrat coalition but that's not one of them. It'd turn the deep south dem but the core dem areas leave.

No, Harry wants Southern Democrats to appeal to Southerners, Northern Democrats to Northerners, and Western Democrats to Westerners.  As do I.

Uh huh. You may claim that but that's not the message I get from his posts. Oh it'd be very easy to make the dems more of a big tent party with nationwide appeal. Have them go federalist/states rights on social issues, moderate on economics(with a focus on effective economics as opposed to small government idealism and fiscal discipline) and favor a humble foreign policy.

If they did that even I'd consider voting for a Dem.  There is no chance in hell that the people in power in the land of Dems would ever even think about change the party in that direction.

Big business types are slowly moving to the dems and alot of the leftism comes from the aging 60s types. Once the baby boomers are gone we're ripe for... changes in both parties since they've been the ones to form and entrench the current coalitions. It may not be likely but I wouldn't rule it out.
