The 90-year-old longest serving Senator in American history, Robert Byrd has been rushed to a local hospital after arriving at the Senate chamber sluggish on Monday.

Let's see.  A man who once held sickeningly racist views...who now rejects those views and admits they were wrong.

Let's compare him to a man who believes abortion providers should be put to death by the state and persists in that (Coburn) or a man who believes homosexuals should be legally prevented from holding jobs in schools or day care centers and, to my knowledge, has never repudiated that perspective (DeMint).

Absolutely not. I consider him one of the best in our party, and a splendid example of how one can change his views later in life. His recognition, and his remorse, of past mistakes makes him one of the politicians I admire most.

Doesn't look all that serious, and I hope nothing goes wrong for him.  Still, unlike Kennedy, this would have consequences if it did go bad.  A Republican would have a decent chance of getting the seat if they have a special election this November.  If the worst happens, we could end up having three different presidents pro tem in a Congress for the first time since the 62nd Congress when the PPT wasn't automatically assigned by seniority, and to resolve a deadlock over who was to get the position they rotated amongst five different Senators.  Let's hope we don't get a trivia question out of this.
