I've been looking around on the Internet to see if any have, starting with some obvious suspects - Jane Fonda, Roman Polanski, Edgar Snow, Ezra Pound, Paul Robeson, Madonna, and there's no evidence that any of  them did. Bobby Fischer stated his intent to, but it's unclear whether or not he actually did. Does anyone know of any celebrities or political figures who have renounced their US citizenship, and if so, on what grounds?

Sadly, I don't think any of them did.  They all talk a good game...until they find out what kind of taxes they'd pay in the various socialist paradises. (or should I say, until their accountants remind them of the fact)

Chile is, if anything, more conservative than America. It doesn't carry the foreign policy baggage however.

Madonna lives in the UK with her British husband Guy Ritchie, so I would guess she pays British taxes.

I was a bit surprised Polanski hasn't renounced his US citizenship, seeing as he'll probably be arrested if he ever returns.

Only in social terms. Economically, it is much more prone to big government.

I think he claims he was not a US citizen at the time of his arrest, and he avoids going anywhere besides France and Poland so he won't be extradited.

ah, makes sense.

That's what I think liberal hollywood celebrities would object to more. They'd never need government assistance and I doubt they would care about things like the capital gains tax, seeing as few of their bank accounts or investments would be in Chile. Things like property and the cost of living would be far lower, so even if taxes on them are higher, it would still be a net gain for them.

Bobby Fischer? Not sure if he would qualify as a celebrity, but...

I didn't think you could "officially" renounce US citizenship?

you can, but you have to sign an oath of renunciation in the presence of US consular officials in a foreign country:

I think the only person that left the county was Michael Moriarty, under Clinton.

Ah but then he decided to come back "he was issued a new passport within 48 hours and they loaned him the money to travel".

Anyhoo,

This is the area I work in, and I can tell you renunciation is not easy, at least under Australian law.

You can't say "I'm renouncing my citizenship" unless you either have or could easily gain citizenship of another country. Since Australia is a signatory on the UN Convention on Stateless persons.

Not sure about US law though.
