I think that Romney is the smartest choice for a running mate at this time. He gives us Michigan and Colorado and Nevada are safe in the GOP column if Romney is the running mate. The reason that I say that is because his father was a goverenor of Michigan and Romney won Michigan in the primary season. He can keep Nevada and Colorado safe because of the mormon vote.

Discuss. Use maps if you wish, but it is not required.

He would certainly shore up the vital 'vote for candidate who has a running mate who's father was governor over 40 years ago' vote in Michigan. I'd say that'll win Michigan by 15 points at least.

Any effect he'd have in any of those states you mentioned would be minimal, in my view.

Romney is McCain, best pick right now. MI would stay a toss-up. I don't think Romney will help out in CO and NV that much. But the bad thing is, state like VA, NC, MO, OH ect will be turned off because Romney isn't very much liked in them states.

A Mormon on the Republican ticket would ensure that Obama is not absolutely crushed in states like Kentucky and West Virginia.

I dont like Mitt, but he would reassure conservatives and motivate the Mormon turnout which would help in battlegrounds like Colorado and Nevada. He can only help in states like Michigan as well. But I think there are better choices than flip flopping Mitt. He could also alienate some voters such as myself.

Are Colorado and Nevada filled full of usually non-voting Mormons who will suddenly turn out and double the Mormon vote for McCain if he selects an LDS vice president?  Most Mormons are Republicans and vote as it is. That's like saying Ohio is going to be safe state because Obama's going to turn out the African-American vote.

And I disagree with Lief that Romney as VP will spark antagonism in Appalachia.

Also,  according to Wikipedia, Nevada is 11% LDS and Colorado is 2%

Out of curiosity, why is George Allen your hero?

There are more Mormons in Washington, Hawaii and New Mexico than in Colorado. There are very few Mormons in Colorado.

Because he loves the south almost as much as I do!

If McCain is thinking "I would like to pick a running mate who I personally despise, and who would severely undercut my own claims at being the candidate of 'authenticity'", Romney's his man.

For Obama, the best political choice is Clinton.  Other good choices are Webb, Richardson, Warner, and Rendell.

How and why does Romney deliver Michigan?  I mean, seriously.  His father was Governor there almost before I was born.  That's a loooooong time ago for most of you.

If this logic holds, does Kathleen Sebelius deliver Ohio for the same reason?  Wasn't her father Governor of that state at one time?

Now -- will McCain win Michigan?  Quite possibly.  But having Willard on the ticket won't be why.
