These highlighters are a veritable atrocity against mankind; the contrast between the ink and white paper is simply unbearable.

And yet, they appear to be popular. Indeed, I could not find "classic" yellow at Wal-Mart, Target, or even Office Depot.

Thankfully, there is still Amazon.com...

The whole purpose of a highlighter is to highlight, so the contrast should be severe.

It is the form of contrast--not contrast itself--that I object to. It is no easier to find this obnoxiously bright yellow, than it is to find streaks of "standard" yellow. Each highlights effectively; the former happens to also be an eyesore.

Ya know what's worse?  The people that highlight 3/4s of the words in a book.  If you're highlighting more than 10 or 15% of a given text, you're doing something wrong.

I try to avoid the use of highlighters.  For one thing, they tend to bleed onto the other side and then you have a problem with them.  The overuse of highlighters by others was also a reason why I tended to buy new textbooks even when used ones were available.  Of course, there are those who delight in highlighting random words in a kaleidescope of colors.
