What caused this quite surprising little epiphany in your still maturing mind, if I may be so intrusive as to inquire?

I've been shifting rightward recently, and I just realized that I fit better as a moderate-liberal Republican, like Johnn Warner, or as an Independent, like Joe Lieberman, than as a Democrat.  I probably won't stay in the GOP long, and will be an Independent soon; I just don't know.
Really? That is quite stupid of you. I though you liked Ted Kennedy, FDR, and HHH. Just be an Indy, thats fine but lets face it there are way more good moderate Dems, than Republicans.

I think it's possible to admire those men and not be a Democrat.
How many Republicans do you admire? I like Hagel, Snowe, Collins, Smith, Warner and Specter, but I am not a Republican.

Mr. Constine, what caused this quite surprising little epiphany in your still maturing mind, if I may be so intrusive as to inquire?

You don't really believe he has switched political allegiances, do you?  Tongue

It should be obvious that benconstine is just screwing around.

He claims not. Maybe he wants to make this thing more of a novel than a short story or something. The odd thing, is that I was more hard wired as a kid, than now, which may be is yet another reason why I am a bit "out there" on the continuum or something, like my law parters continually remind me. Of Republicans who are currently in the Senate: Smith, Arnold, Murkowski, McCain, Hutchison, Hagel, Voinovich, Lugar, Grassley, Bond, Cochran, Graham, Warner, Specter, Collins, and Snowe.

Yes and no. I vote republican on a local level since northeastern republicans are more moderate but (usually) democrat on a national level.

No. Had the Democrats nominated Clinton or Edwards, I probably would have been, but I'm definitely behind Obama.

The thought did just occur to me that he is trying to prod me in (what he considers to be) a subtle, almost counter-intuitive way to leave the Democratic Party openly and officially.  Think of it this way -he has virtually nothing in common with the Republican Party and is hardly inclined to vote for any of its candidates, and yet he still insists on being considered as a Republican -basically what he sees as a mirror-image reflection of myself as a Democrat.

Or am I giving him too much credit?

Ya, Occam's razor is your friend, Frodo.   What I fear for you "younguns" is how deeply disillusioned you  might become if you invest too much psychological energy in politics, as anything other than a spectator sport. The more you know, and watch, and age, the more I "angst" that you may realize, at least through my little lens, how supine and useless most of the political class is. They want to be somebody, as political entrepreneurs, rather than think deeply about issues, and then enter the fray to make a contribution based on their acquired intellectual capital, in the public interest - and DO SOMETHING about which they have a genuine passion. I have met a few politicians actually, for enough time to probe them a bit. I found most deeply disappointing. Such is life.

Part of it of course, is the process by which we elect folks.  It is all about whoring for money all the time. It's disgusting really. What "normal" person is going to subject themselves to the degrading process of dialing for dollars?

You're giving me too much credit.  If you want to stay a Democrat, stay a Democrat; like I said, you don't have to support your Party all the time to be a member.

White/Jewish Republican...not really.

I think there's a good chance Jews could eventually become swing voters, though.

Yes.  I've managed to vote for four different parties on the same ballot  (D, R, L, and UC).

I tend to be in most competitive elections, including this one.

I don't try to, though.  If you're liberal, and the liberal candidates are competent, vote for 'em, I say.

I disliked Edwards possibly more than I disliked Clinton. For entirely different reasons, of course.

Working Families is a party on the ballot outside of New York? I never knew that.

Indeed. Is New York the only state with crossendorsement or does Massachusetts have it too?

Hm. I asked that question since crossendorsement is the only way parties like the Conservatives or Working Families manage to still be on the ballot here.
