House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "is reported to be privately talking about Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the House Democratic Caucus chairman, as the next senator from Illinois if Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidential election," according to Robert Novak.

"The same source said Pelosi indicated that House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer would be her eventual successor as speaker, even though she opposed his election to the second-ranking leadership position. Emanuel has been widely mentioned as the speaker of the next decade."

Pelosi wants to get a potential rival out of the House? What a shocker!

Exactly the reason Rahm wouldn't take it even if offered.

My guess: It'll go to one of Illinois' lower statewide office holders, or Dan Hynes (the guy who came in second to Obama in the 2004 primary.)

So he wouldn't take a U.S. Senate seat being handed to him just so he could have a chance at Speaker in a few years? What a greedy, foolish guy.

I highly doubt Rahm would turn down the chance at a Senate seat.

You can call it foolish, but turning down a seat in the upper house at the vague hope of leadership in the lower house doesn't seem all that greedy to me.

I have thought there would be some pressure to replace Obama with an African-American, and he seems the most obvious candidate.

It would be foolish for him to take it. He's gotten so far in the House the past few years, it would seem ridiculous for him to start all over again in the Senate, where he probably wouldn't be able to do as well.  I hope he stays in the House, and takes on the position of Majority Leader or Speaker.

Only because this guy probably thinks he's guaranteed the Speaker's spot.

It depends on whether the governor is Blagojevich or Quinn.
