Since 1900, what do you think was the weakest Presidential ticket?  It's a tie between McGovern/Eagleton/Shriver, and Mondale/Ferraro.

Obama/**** could be up there if he loses this year.

McGovern/Shriver was weaker than Mondale/Ferraro.

Nixon first four years weren't as good as Reagan's, so you could make the argument that McGovern's battle was less of an uphill climb.  In both cases, it was "party hero getting the automatic nomination even if they weren't the best candidate."

If 1900 is modern, you have to consider William Taft's re-election campaign, Dewey doesn't defeat Truman, and the weak candidacies of Adlai Stevenson, Wendell Wilkie, and Barry Goldwater as up there, too.

I am with you on that, simply given the margin of loss in both cases.

Consider this: Stevenson was running against Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander during the largest military conflict in human history and a man almost universally beloved, and Stevenson still got 44% the first time and 42% the second.  I don't think anyone the Democrats could've nominated in 1952 and 1956 could've done better.

Weakest, as in unelectable?  I'd say Kerry/Edwards.  Only reason they got the votes they did because they were "Not Bush".  You could've had this on the ballot and got similar results:

D - Not Bush
R - Not a Dem

I don't think I heard of anyone that said they actually liked Kerry or his ideas.  He was basically Bush part 2 anyway, just in a different skin.   The Dems handed Bush his 2nd term by selecting this ticket.  If they picked Dean (yes, even with his crazy battle cry - why was that a big deal anyway?), they would've probably won handily 70-30.

The democrats winning 70%? Fat chance of that. At best they'd win by a slim majority in '04.

Yep 70%. I would've voted for Dean.  I ended up voting for Badnarik.  Also, I think you could've got a lot of people actually liking Dean, like Obama now.   And he didn't have the Obamaversies.  This is hands down the worse ticket for me this century for a mainstream party, just about anyone else in their primaries would've done better than Kerry in the general election.

Edit: I also think Obama will win maybe not quite as handily.  Plus, there's that Nader guy some people vote for whatever reason.  It will be like Obama: 55%, McCain: 40%, Nader: 2%, LP/Con: 3% (combined).   +/- 5% error here.   RPers could push Barr or Baldwin a few % points, but I don't see much agreement.  Barr is considered by his detractors a "CIA stooge/neo-con", and Baldwin is too conservative/christian for the pot smokers.  They should combine their ticket into Barr/Baldwin and get RP's support - then you might have something.

Mondale/Ferraro. McGovern/Eagleton comes awfully close but he still got more electoral votes.

I don't see why. Dean made a ton of gaffes even before the media framed him as a raving maniac, and was perceived as being very liberal from the start. He would have had to run a considerably different campaign than he did in OTL. Clark and Edwards both could have won more states than Kerry IMO.
