26...

What happened to the straight Tory v. OMRLP race? Cry

I have no idea...

Fuller breakdown of parties.

"Church of the Militant Elvis"? What do they stand for?

"The Church of the Militant Elvis Party (aka Militant Elvis Anti-Tesco Popular Front) was founded in 2001 to overthrow the Corporate Capitalist State which turned Elvis, a man of immense talent, into a fat media joke. Some members of the Party also believe that George W Bush is the anti-Christ - ‘Beelzebush’ - who will trigger off the battle of Armageddon.

In a recent controversial development Lord Biro was demoted to Deputy Leader by the Church Focus Team due to his age (62 yrs) and inappropriate behaviour in certain Nottingham pubs. The new Leader is ‘Lesbian Elvis’, a female dummy, who was the star of Lord Biro’s ‘Armageddon Art Show’ staged in Nottingham last summer (2006) [picture provided]. Many dummies have held political office before eg. Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Geoff Hoon, etc. But this is the first time that a female dummy has reached such a high position.

Church Statement

In 1997 I stood against Neil Hamilton at Tatton (116 votes) and was an inspiration to Peter Mandelson [letter by Mandelson linked to here]. In 2001 I formed the Church of the Militant Elvis and stood against Eric Pickles in Brentwood, Essex (68 votes) and in Erewash in 2005 against Kilroy Silk (116 votes).  I’ve also stood in four Nottingham City Council elections the latest being Wollaton West 2007 (105 votes).

As well as being a painter and decorator by trade, I’m also an artist and a poet (pen name Lord Biro). My poetry has been published in various magazines and newspapers including The Independent, The Guardian and the Daily Mirror. An abstract drawing of Elvis - “Moody Blue” - won first prize at the Annual Graceland Art Exhibition,  Memphis, in the “Non professional category” 1996.

Apart from being a keen fan of Elvis, I’m also interested in green issues such as global warming, the destruction of the Amazon rain forest and the attempts by Tesco to takeover the high street. I also like political satire (Private Eye), seaside postcard artist Donald McGill, Andy Warhol, George Orwell and poet Edward Lear.

Pet hates include Big Brother, gastro-pubs, children being targetted by big corporate brands, the New Nottingham Market Square and the mocking of the working class by middle class writers etc."

He has my endorsement.

Miss Great Britain Party (politics of appearance)

I'm fairly sure that designation can be applied to most of the other parties as well.

Socialist Equality Party (hard leftists)

Based around one of the madder Trot sects IIRC.

And more openly racist (and more open about their roots) than the BNP.

From the Wikipedia "did you know" thing:

... that George Hargreaves, Christian Party candidate in the forthcoming UK Parliamentary by-election [Haltemprice and Howden], has said that the dragon symbol on the Welsh flag (pictured) is "nothing less than the sign of Satan"?

Church of the Militant Elvis Party (general crazies)
Uh, he sounds like a perfectly sane man running, as a self-admitted joke, on several pet peeves. Which almost all of are perfectly legitimate ones, btw.
Wherever you place the Loonies - one might put them a bit lower down - the only possible place for him is directly ahead of them.

Now for the latest absurdity! (link)

Because of fears that 26 candidates would be too much weight for their usual temporary stage, only returning officer will be on a small platform, with the candidates standing in a large semi-circle around the platform.  About what time should the result be announced?  I know the polls close in a little over an hour, but I don't know how long Haltemprice normally takes to count.

Hard to say; Haltemprice is normally a high-turnout constituency so past declaration times might not meen much. And obviously 26 candidates won't make for quick counting, even if most are total jokes. So some time after 1am, BST. But not sure when

Report is that the English Democrats did surprisingly well (probably voter confusion with the Liberal Democrats) and will take second or third, Davis with about 75%. The Greens and Jill Saward round out the top four.

Davis gets about 17,000 votes, Greens second with about 1,700. Nothing more yet.

As there was the possibility for it not to happen, it is worth reporting that all candidates do appear to have gotten votes, in the plural.

So does that mean the English Dems saved their deposit or not (though it looks like the recount was to see who came in second)
