Congressman Bill Jefferson (D) -- who remains under indictment on federal corruption charges -- has drawn two new primary rivals in recent days. State Representative Cedric Richmond and Jefferson Parish Councilman Byron Lee both announced their candidacies for the CD-2 over the past week. The Louisiana Democratic Party broke with Jefferson over the corruption issue during the 2006 race, backing his unsuccessful Dem primary opponent.

He'll likely win.

There is something wrong with New Orleans voters.

First they reelect Ray Nagin and then they reelect Jefferson.

Democrats made the mistake on Jefferson by choosing Karen Carter, someone who was so far to the left of New Orleans on social issues, that she simply drove the whites and a good portion of the blacks to vote for Jefferson out of fear.

As for Nagin vs. Landrieu, what precisely is the difference between the two other than skin color (well not really much) and the fact that one used to be a Republican.

Well, not much to disagree with about Carter.

The difference is that Landrieu wasn't proven to be an incompetent buffoon and he didn't botch the response to Katrina. He probably wouldn't have made any "chocolate-city" comments.

Landrieu didn't play much of a part in Katrina, but he did prove competent in brining back tourism to the city following the hurricane. That is the job of the Lt. Governor in Louisiana.
The Landrieu clan is actually pretty liberal.

Nagin is still a Republican on the inside, I suspect. I think he simply turned Democrat for political opportunity. Even after that, he didn't hesitate in endorsing Bobby Jindal for Governor in 2003.

Based on the precinct results, Carter clearly won the white vote and Jefferson the black vote. Though Jefferson did have some obvious support among white Republicans.

Jefferson won by keeping the (more middle class) Black bits of Jefferson Parish solidly behind him IIRC. As in, Carter got joke candidate percentages there.
