I've been looking back at my 2004 election recording and realised that Bush crossed the 270 line at 1.00pm Eastern time the day after the election. With the exception of 2000 and presidencies decided by the House, is this the latest that a president has crossed the 270 winning line?

I say either midnight or 1 AM. Maybe midnight, because we all know Alaska will go handily to McCain. They're not going to officially call it before then because the West Coast will not have finished voting. In the future, Alaska should probably close it's polls with Hawaii and the rest of the west coast.

For example, in 2000, Texas, Kansas, Florida, and Michigan were called before all the polls in the states had closed. In 2004, they waited until all the polls in every state had closed before calling the state or saying "too close to call".

However, Virginia's polls close at 7 Eastern. If it's called early for Obama in a very short time, it will be a foregone conclusion that Obama wins long before the polls in CA close, and then they may start calling other states alot faster.

Obama has the opinion to achieve this at exactly 11 PM EST:
