Most of my beliefs are strongly personal and I believe they should not be applied through the federal government. On top of that I'm Catholic and certainly wouldn't call myself a damn Protestant.

Same!  I still don't know how we ended up in opposite parties!

My historical interpretation seems pretty different and I dislike the current post-Reagan brand of 'supply side,' socially authoritarian Republicanism. It's basically just bigger government for the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Of course a lot of Dems aren't much better.

That's pretty much the impression I get. To be honest I think you leaving the party in some way is inevitable though. As the Republicans continue to solidify their base in the south and with hawks/evangelicals their alliance with the other factions in the GOP is becoming more tenuous.. Especially as Professionals leave for the Dems. My guess is that eventually they'll nominate someone with 'populist' credentials like Huckabee in another 4-8 years after McCain loses (12 years tops). That's just the way the parties seem to be drifting.
