I am greatly.

When I say a city's name, I will never use it to refer to anything except what is in that exact city limits. If it's one block out of the city limits, it's not part of the city, period. If you don't live in the city limits, you don't live in the city period. I don't care about what the statistics are on the "metro area" either considering that includes parts that are nothing alike, the only thing I care about is the stats on the exact city.

I hit yes, but meant no.  Those suburban residents probably still use most of the cities services and identify themselves with the major city they surround rather than "Greenlake Hills Community" or whatever.

People from Eden Prairie would never say they are from Minneapolis. Most would probably be offended at the idea they're from Minneapolis actually.

No; city boundaries can vary greatly. The City of London is tiny. And the City of Tokyo was abolished in 1943.

Exception to the rule.

Exactly. I live in a suburb of Miami. If somebody asks me, I just say Miami. Why complicate things by saying that I'm from some tiny little suburb that never gets mentioned?

No. Why would I? I don't have stupid hangups about suburbs that I stupidly obsess over. Besides, if I tell someone out of state I live in Smyrna they have no idea where I'm talking about, but if I tell them Atlanta or metro-Atlanta they do know.

No since we are pretty much the Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha Metro Area, so that's 3 counties. Tongue

It bugs me because I don't want people assuming I live in some suburb when I say I live in Minneapolis. I want it clear I live within Minneapolis city limits.

Before I moved when I said I was moving to Minneapolis I had so many people assuming I meant some suburb. It was really annoying.

Yes and No. If that makes any sense.

Though in a British context I'm thinking more of the traditional boundaries of cities than the various ghastly things inflicted on us by pointy headed bureaucrats in the last third of the 20th century.

No...most people in Allegheny County refer to themselves as Pittsburghers.

I technically live out of the city limits but only 5 miles from Heinz Field.

I live closer to downtown than many city residents do.

That's only possible because Pittsburgh is oddly shaped.

True, but the first sentence of my reply rings true......and Allegheny County is a decent size

No, but I prefer for people to add in some kind of disclaimer such as "metro" or "area" or even just "around."

Even living inside the city limits can be deceiving.  I mean, Staten Island counts as part of New York City.  And parts of Denver don't even look like they're part of a major city at all.

Regardless they're still in the city.

I'm annoyed because of many conversations I had like this before I moved.

Me: I'm moving soon anyway.
Person: To where?
Me: Minneapolis.
Person: What area?
Me: Well the place I got is kind of on the northeast side.
Person: So like the Brooklyn Park area?
Me: NO IT'S IN MINNEAPOLIS, WHERE ELSE WOULD IT BE?

Of course here no one says they're from "Minneapolis", they say they're from whatever neighborhood they're from. I'm from "Whittier, near Uptown".

Southern California cities are weird. San Pedro has no business being in Los Angeles. But it is.

And then there's San Diego. Why exactly does a thin strip run through San Diego Bay?

The city wanted a port that it controlled. The San Fernando Valley was annexed as part of the water grab from the Owens Valley. LA thought big.

Hell, I tell people I'm from San Francisco because they don't know where San Jose is.

How could that be, after this?

Do you know the way to San Jose?
I've been away so long
I may go wrong and lose my way
Do you know the way to San Jose
I'm going back to find some piece of mind San Jose -a
L. A. is a great big freeway
Put a hundred down a by a car
In a week - or maybe two - they'll make you a star
Weeks turn into years and quickly pass
And all the stars there never were a parkin' cars and pumpin' gas
I've got lots of friends in San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Can't wait to get back to San Jose
Wo oh oh oh
Do You know the way to San Jose?
