So basically America needs to consume less? I think gas prices are rapidly taking care of that.

The USA consumes almost as much as the entirety of Europe? That is slightly shocking.

sbane, gas prices in the USA are still far lower than throughout much of Europe.

That is why European cities are designed in a different way than American cities. Here people commute more than a 100 miles a day through traffic just so they can have a nice big yard. That will change soon. Perhaps jobs will move though but any way you cut it consumption will go down.

Only a couple of western European countries are paying attention to the fact that oil supplies are starting to dwindle.

A few others were unfortunate enough to see their economies disintegrate.

Everyone else is pissing like there's no tomorrow...and gun' get raped.

Japan is realizing quite quickly and painfully that it needs to reduce oil consumption. However unlike America, Japan can change over to a more efficient economy because people live in compact cities and there technological capabilities are superb.

You are very right about other Asian countries doing their part. Singapore has been growing quite a lot economically and I believe they don't have any sources of power other than fossil fuels. I actually have never heard of much of a green movement in Singapore (although they are quite politically apathetic there). China is below the amount that should correlate with their pop. but that is now excuse for the massive increase in oil consumption. If China wants to grow well and sustainably they should start early with mass transit, alternative energies, and better fuel efficiency.

I believe most people are focusing on the figures rather than the blog itself and the figures are from BP.

Which newspapers are we talking about here? If it is the Daily Mail then I don't think it is the figures that people ignore but the spin on it and there are often good reasons to; the Daily Mail is more than prone to sensationalism. I remember meeting somebody who wrote for either the Mail or the Daily Mirror who outright stated that they were encouraged to write misleading articles and also falsify stories in the interest of their political remit. Likewise with other papers, I would imagine that people don't dispute government figures, but the way they are employed politically. Then again, I can't speak for everyone on this site so of course there could be some who would outright disagree with the figures, it all depends on whether they have a legitimate reason to. For instance, people will often disagree with polls conducted and often they have good reason to.

Agreed, but can't you say the same things about blogs?  Are you to suggest the author of the OP is spin free?

I completely agree that you can say the same thing about blogs. Thusfar people have been commenting mainly on the raw data rather than the blog entry itself; I only read the entry after I'd posted commenting on the statistics.

Hey jmfcst do you believe we will use up all the oil before the rapture?

only foolish virgins will use up their oil before the Rapture:

Mat 25: 8 The five foolish virgins said to the five wise virgins , "Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out."   9 "No," they replied, "there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves." 10 But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived [the Rapture]. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

Therefore, time to invade and steal oil, so we can hoard it until the Rapture
