Currently watching Pataki speech.

He's fantastic!!!

I predicted the 'win one for the Gipper' a couple of months ago.

I further predict in the in the last few days at gatherings of Republican workers, the 'win one for the Gipper' will be repeated to energize their efforts.

Pataki's speech makes him a contender for the 2008 Republican nomination.

He laid out the case for Bush better than any other speaker I have heard.

Bush should use Pataki as a surrogate to the battleground states.

Surprised about the constant and redudant negativity.  It seems like an incumbant convention should be inherently positive, bragging about accomplishments instead of bitter attacks.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good speech, but it is a very curious strategy.

Bandit would have said the same thing about George Bush, George H.W. Bush, Reagan, Nixon, etc.

Pataki is pro-choice, that automatically kills his chances.

But he is the governor of NY.  That more than compensates

So you would not have laughed about him running before 2000?  My mistake then.

to the religious right voters in the primaries? I don't think so.

If Pataki's not conservative enough to please the Republicans, then the Republicans have even worse problems than I thought.

I was also impressed. Maybe I had low expectations or thought his speech would be wooden, but he did really good. It's been the best overall convention I can recall for the GOP. Everyone was excellent to stellar in their presentations. Zell took the cake, though, that could not be topped by anybody, as far as I'm concerned.

"...With what, spitballs?!" Great stuff.

Didn't Pataki look/sound a bit like Gore tonight?

I think Gore looked a little bit like Reagan during the 2000 campaign. For some reason he began acquiring Reagan-like facial expressions and stuff.

There were sections of small negativity, but that negativity is over Democratic negativity.

I was surprised that he nailed Clinton on failing to act against al Qaida.  I've thought for a while that this was one of the strongest ways to attack Kerry, but the administration has avoided it so far.  I wonder if this charge will appear in ads, or if it was strictly convention material.  I’m guessing the latter-especially if Bush remains in the lead.

Overall, a very good speech.  It was positive on Bush and was negative on Kerry without being overly aggressive.

What everyone seems to be missing is another key element of the speech.

As Pataki pointed out, when Bush says he will do something, hes does it.

Credibility.

When Kerry says something, well, you can expect him to contradict himself at least once.

As to action, well, Kerry will dither.

08 will be Hillary's turn.

She'll destroy the barefoot boy from the carolinas.

Pataki in turn will decisively defeat her if he is the nominee.

Huh? Edwards has no appeal to us tax-hating straight white males. That's a pretty big group.

But we always get ignored...weh... Sad

Assuming Kerry loses Edwards is the favorite for 2008.

anyone who thinks a pro-choice candidate could win the GOP nomination is rather deluded.

Yeah, he'll play well among the socially liberal Republicans in Iowa, and the folks in NH who voted for Pat Buchanan. Oh and then comes South Carolina and all those southern states. Perfect ground for a pro-choice candidate.

How many states are there where the Republican primary electorate is not predominately non-religious right and socially liberal or moderate? NY, NJ, CT, RI, MA and I guess maybe ME and VT. And none of those except ME vote until Super Tuesday. And of course NJ is so late it really doesn't matter. Sorry, but I fail to see where Pataki can pick up ground anywhere.

I mean sheesh, if McCain was too moderate, how can a northeastern Rockefeller Republican not be?

Run states' rights on social issues, since the fed has no constitutional function dealing with such.

A pro-choice Republican is 100% electable, as long as he believes in the Constitution. Because federal government is for defense and trade/interaction purposes only.
