Question: Can a fleet on a coast, SUPPORT, but not attack, an inland province?

A unit A can support another unit B in or moving to any area that unit A could move to itself. Thus, a fleet cannot support an army in an inland province that the fleet could not move into from its current position.

Alright, thanks.  Shucks.  Can you disband a unit when it's not forced into a box and you haven't lost a supply center?

You can disband a dislodged unit even when there is a place to retreat to. You cannot, as far as I'm aware, disband a unit that is not dislodged except when you've lost a supply center.

I'm sorry I'm running late. Two factors were at play: an old mate of mine was in town and staying with us over the weekend (from interstate) and I've been out with him most of today, and secondly, my laptop charger transformer thing died, so I have not been able to log on as much as normal. I'm fixing it all up now. My apologies for my delay.

No worries. I'll update the map tonight.

It being now winter 1906, if relevant nations could message me their build orders, I'll update that on the map tonight, too.

I should probably update the current status, in case anyone's confused about how many builds/disbands are required:

France
Build 2

Russia
Remove 1

Italy
No Change

Germany
Build 1

Austria-Hungary
No Change

Turkey
Remove 1

England
Build 1

The builds will be:

France
Build A Paris, F Marseilles

Russia
Disband A Bulgaria

Italy
No Change

Germany
Build F Berlin

Austria-Hungary
No Change

Turkey
Disband A Trieste

England
Build A Edinburgh

So at the start of Spring 1907, the map appears thus:

ilikeverin pointed out to me that I made an initial error in posting this earlier - I had him building an army in Berlin, whereas he actually requested a fleet (now corrected). I'm sorry for any confusion I may have caused there.

One last question:

I know that Spain, Bulgaria and St. Petersburg have North/South ports for fleets, but can a fleet move or support an attack from Smryna to Ankara?  Or a fleet from Venice to Rome?  I assume not, but just curious.

If anyone wants to see my class's map, it can be seen here (I think), just click "download file"
http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=70757

I'm Gemany in a hard-alliance with England.  I entered hard negotiations last turn to get us both to withdraw our troops from the Denmark-Sweden border, truly the triumph of diplomacy where both of us would benefit from backstabbing the other (and only so many turns left in the game, since it's one turn a week and the semester ends before January).

We would have gained 3 territories in the initial 2 turns, but everything that could go wrong did.  I think the other teams got annoyed with my long essays about why an alliance with me would be advantageous and some people acted irrationally/unpredictably (Italy going for Munich when it was obvious they couldn't hold it) Smiley

Will check out your map in just a moment, but will address the whole rules enquiry first.

Turning now to page 5 in our rulebooks (second paragraph, directly below first diagram), we see:

Note that the italics are in the rulebook.

There's actually an article written by the creator of Diplomacy, Allan B Calhamer, entitled "The Coast of Moscow" (a humourous, rather than serious piece) which plays upon this exact concept. It is located here:

Ah, thank you.  No need to check out the map unless you're curious at my attempt for extra credit in an upper division political science class.

And to follow up with the other half of the question, since the fleets can't move that way they can't support actions in those provinces.

I did check, and with your alliance you look to be in decent shape. Th Russian seem to have quite a strange position. It's hard to see who their friends are.

They tried to organize against us (Germany) despite my overtures against them.  At one point not too long ago Russia had Berlin and Italy had Munich.   I helped England attack them and France backstabbed England, creating a mutual need for an alliance.  Most teams are unresponsive, thus I've decided to rely completely on teams that are actually willing to respond to emails (just the one - England) and put my complete trust in them.  Seems more effective for the long-term.  I've had to move my troops around quite a bit and all of my initial gambles fell apart in the absolute worst way.  This is my salvage, haha.

Russia's gotten demoralized, I can hear them talking in class.  This is bad because if they are predictable I know the right move for me to make (A Prussia -> Poland, A Silesia support A Kiel -> Munich) since they should either give up on Poland or send 2 guys there.

My friends,

I'm thinking of bowing out of this one. I'm having less time these days and the game is pretty much over for my part. In this game there isn't really any luck involved. If the odds are stacked, they're stacked. At this point this is looking like a slow death for Russia with England and France being the only ones with a shot at victory. I feel like I did my best but it clearlyy wasn't enough yet. Now, I don't want to leave you all hanging so I'll play on till a replacer steps out (I'm guessing this turn will be required of me, at least).

I thought you've been playing very well. We'll be sorry to lose you, but if you don't feel you're able to continue on, that's understandable. I think Lunar is hoping to join the next game and was the first to ask about joining the next game. Perhaps he might be interested in stepping up to fill your shoes in the meantime?
