5.8, huh? There was a 5.4 on my 13th birthday, 9 months ago. Not a big deal. It'll be fine.

Yeah, 5.8 isn't big as far as earthquakes go. I'm surprised that you even heard about it.

I know its not a big a earthquake.  Heck, we have nearly that big here in Oklahoma frequently.  I think we heard about it mainly because of its location and proximity to downtown Los Angeles.  They just said that this magnitude happens all the time, but mostly where people don't live.

It just feels like somebody upstairs is jumping impossibly hard.

A 5.8 isn't that common even in California. It isn't necessarily a weak earthquake, but it's not like the people in LA live in fragile shacks.

Not really news. 6.5 is pretty much the over-under for a significant earthquake in a developed country.

Well, California was really on fire for Obama; now it's shaking for him.

Or maybe GM3 is right; California wasn't so fond of McCain, so it decided to shake in protest. Protest shake!

There was a 5.4 in San Jose less than a year ago. This is mainly a story so as to push Senator Stevens got indicted off the top headline.

There was a 7.9 quake in Lisbon in 1969, and only chimneys fell, so I doubt this is gonna have much of an impact in LA.

Are you sure? 7.9 is rather brutal; that's about the San Francisco 1906 earthquake.

Most of the damage & deaths came from the fire, which destroyed a lot of wooden houses. I am surprised though that a 7.9 would cause that little damage.

Well, I think that might be explained because the Lisbon earthquakes actually--the same was true of the 1755 one--have their epicenter some distance away in the Atlantic. Also the one in 1755 produced a much worse tsunami.

A 7.9 earthquake would literally translate to over 5,623 times more destructive as a 5.4 earthquake.  Logarithmic scale, with a 3/2 damage exponential bonus in calculating energy release.

(102.5)1.5 = 5,623.4

Distance, my friend, distance. Lisbon doesn't have a fault right on top of it like SF does.

Right on top of it is, well, correct. Right along the interstate between San Jose and San Francisco (which is, paradoxically, both more scenic and less crowded than the US highway), there is a lake formed by the fault.

Not really news. 6.5 is pretty much the over-under for a significant earthquake in a developed country at least for a well prepared earthquake zone.

Fixed it.  If a 6.5 hit New York, Memphis or Chicago it would be utter disaster.

19 miles from my office. A secretary panicked and fled. I never left my chair.

With a little editing those would make excellent last words.
