It's almost sad that Begich is only up by 13, considering what's been going on.  Even Torricelli was trailing by 20.

Well, it's a good thing that Stevens is the Republican's best candidate in this race. Hahah!

That's only the case because of name recognition, of course.

If Steven's has an ounce of intelligence in him he'll drop out in September so the GOP can appoint a legit candidate for the nomination (Parnell, Lesil Mcguire, etc.)

That wouldn't be a very intelligent move on Stevens' part at all. This way, he can obstruct his trial while he runs for reelection; if he were to stand aside, the trial would proceed more quickly. Don't expect most, if any, politicians to have the party at heart.

Also, I missed this on first look, but Stevens has a 50% favorability rating! (Begich's is 63%.) That's easily enough to carry Stevens through a primary.

As Spade already noted, now that Stevens successfully expedited his trial, his departure from the race is unlikely. He's making quite a risky gambit, one that I fear will pay off in time to save his career.

If it was possible to convince Bob Torricelli to drop out, then anything's possible with Stevens.

And Burns only lost by 3000 votes in 2006.

And IIRC, there was no trial or indictments for Torch either!

Eh, Stevens has a proven history of stubbornness... I doubt he'll give up without a fight. His ego is bigger than anyone else's in the Senate. Yes, that includes Obama and McCain...
