Unless he's mentally ill, which is probably the case. Of course, whether it's in prison (death row or not) or a state mental hospital I doubt this guy will ever see the outside world again.

You didn't see it in the excerpt here, but they are pretty sure the guy is a paranoid schizophrenic.. in which case he should be in a mental hospital where he can be treated... not on death row.

Still, I was queasy and shocked when I read it in the paper.

But what in his mind, or any insane person for that matter, told him to do that? I'm curious if he was thinking in any recognizable manner before he did it. But even if he was, I doubt he’d be able to articulate his thoughts given that he’s already pretty severely insane.
