I've got a little of everything.  Italian, Russian Jew, Irish, English, German, and probably some more that I don't know about.

My ancestors were all English, having come over on the Mayflower in 1620.

But the most of the English part came from Norway about 900 years ago Wink

German, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, Norwegian.

Pretty much a smorgasbord of northern European nationalities.

There may be others that I'm not aware of since some of my ancestors have been here for centuries, and there's no telling who they bred with.

Different parts of Germany. Oh, and a tiny Dutch drop and possibly a tiny Polish drop as well, but these are way back.

I could have some Swedish ancestry for all I know.

I only found out about the Norwegian connection recently, and I'm still a little confused about it.  I was told that my Dutch ancestors were actually Norwegians who travelled from Norway to Holland, and then from Holland to the US.  This supposedly took place in the 1600s.  I guess they came to New Amsterdam, as it was called at the time.

My most dominant ancestry is probably Irish and German.  My mom was 3/4 Irish and 1/4 German, and my dad has German on his side also as far as I know, among other things.

But I really don't feel much connection to my ancestry.  I was raised that I am an American.  Period.  Neither one of my parents put any emphasis on ethnicity.

Well, that does seem a little strange...America is supposedly a nation of immigrants, so I guess it isnt strange for you to feel American...it's still fun to know about one's ancestry, imo.

It's true that America is a nation of immigrants, but once you've been here long enough, the connection to the "old country" is lost.  That has definitely happened in my case.

There are also differences among different ethnic groups in their attitude toward their ethnic backgrounds.  Some actively reject their ancestral countries in order to make themselves more American.  My dad's ancestors were here so long that there was no connection at all to his ancestral lands.  A visit to any of them would be strictly as a tourist.

In my mom's case, her ancestors had come to America much more recently, but she rejected the stereotypical behavior associated with her ethnic group.  She simply wanted to be a fully assimilated American, not associated with any particular ethnic group.  We never lived in an "ethnic" neighborhood or belonged to any ethnically-centered clubs or groups, although my grandparents did.

English, Welsh, French, Prussian and a little bit of Spanish (although I suspect that it might be Native American, as does my mother)
